| 22nd May 2008 Franco | Hawaiian St. Names and Words. - From: Hawaiian Street Names and Words. Hi Tina and Roselani. Out of curiosity, how did you locate this blog, (Hawaiian St. Names and Words)? Reason for my asking is this blog, receives the most readership it seems, by my statistics. I'm so glad people are reading it, even if, I'm needed to be corrected. However, I'm just curious on what I'm doing right, in having this blog discovered. Mahalo. |

| 2nd November 2007 Hawaiian Kango | Aloha, Aloha, ALOHA! - From: ALOHA Means Hello, Good-Bye, Love, Affection, Compassion and More. I haven't been in Hawaii for Aloha Week, but I know what you mean about its ubiquitous usage: Much as the French use "s'il vous plait," I found myself using "aloha" as an interjection! If I inadvertently bumped into someone? "Aloha!" If someone sneezed? "Aloha!" Once, I overheard someone mutter "Aloha" after they let loose with a little burp! They weren't native Hawaiian, of course, but you get my drift . . . Seriously, it does sound like Aloha Week epitomizes the friendliness Hawaii, which is one of the things that keeps me going back. |

Yes, I enjoyed yours also, especially since you were able to see many places I never knew existed in China. You also seemed to be able to make friends with the people you encountered on a deeper level sharing knowledge and interest in their culture. That's a big plus in travel. Frank |

Regarding fire, glad no one was hurt. Considered myself lucky as some neighbors had it much worse. Another Hi rise fire took place a week later, and there was injury, possibly because of bldgs. style of construction (enclosed hallways). |

| 23rd February 2007 a_good_friend | Not the Queen! - From: Have An Oink-derful Chinese New Year!! Hey man, you have one picture in here regarding the Narcissus Queen and it's a picture of one of the court members playing the Chinese zither... Well, that's not the queen. It's actually the Narcissus 1st Princess who also took home the talent title for her zither playing in the pageant! Her name is Sibyl Wong. Please get your facts right before posting something like this for everyone to see. You don't want to give credit to those that don't deserve it. Thanks! |
| 6th January 2007 Franco | - From: Water Drum Song. Glad my journal and photos were able to bring back happy memories. Things are changing fast with lots of new buildings and shopping complexes. Still lots of greenery and open beaches though. Mahalo and Aloha! |
| 6th January 2007 dody | Thanks for the memories - From: Water Drum Song. I lived in Hawaii for many years but now am on the mainland. However, three of my children stayed when we moved or, as they said, we're not going anywhere where we have to wear shoes. I used to go back every year but haven't for about 4-5 years due to circumstances beyond my control, but am going back in February. Love all your pictures and comments as it brings back so many memories. We first lived in Navy housing at Iroquois Point so the pics of Waipahu are very welcome. Then moved to Honolulu. I miss Hawaii and am so glad to have kids there and hope I'm back on schedule for my yearly Mango and Papaya fix! |
| 26th December 2006 Franco | WAIPAHU NOT Waikiki. - From: Water Drum Song. Sorry to those who opened my blog thinking it would be about Waikiki instead of Waipahu. I made a mistake in the fill out of the required blocks, and even now don't know how to correct it. Hope you enjoyed reading and seeing photos of Waipahu, anyway. No one can accuse me of being a (computer) Geek. :) |

When the Dairy went out of business, the store remained and is a fixture on the windward side. You can separate the real windwind folks from all the rest by mentioning "The Hygenic Store" as a landmark. |

| 15th December 2006 Franco | Received in e-mail today. - From: Black Dog Roasting Over an Open Fire. Twelve Days of Christmas There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? Today I found out, thanks to the Internet. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ. Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments. Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love. The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament. The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation. Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy. The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control. The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments. The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples. The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed. |

| 26th October 2006 Franco | - From: Tales from the Double V. Yes, I've been to China too and being from a small island with only recent history, the size of things, the huge population and rich history was mind boggling for me. I'm surprise you've been to many places in Beijing I didn't know existed such as the Minority Museum and Old Summer Palace. Would've like to have seen those. I'd like to go to Yunnan Province and Xinjiang Province also. Tibet is nice, but the high altitude may be a bit rough. You should definetely visit Hawaii also. Culture here is so diverse. Also been you your country and loved it. |

| 15th May 2006 Franco | - From: More on Local Foods. The White Bldg. whose name or function I don't know is located on Merchant St. near the corner of Nuuanu Ave. next to the entrance of the Municipal Parking Lot and across the Kumu Kahua Theatre. The King Kalakaua Statue is located at the corner of Kalakaua Ave. and Kuhio Ave. across Keo's Thai Restraunt. King Kalakaua ran against Queen Emma who was more pro-Bristish while King Kalakaua leaned more towards the Americans. The legislature elected him King and his wife Kapiolani became Queen. There was almost a riot following so their was no big coronation. Nine years later inspired by his travels by pomp and grandeur of Monarchies around the world, held a elaborate coronation with hulas, fireworks, etc. for which in was in some circles critisizied for because of the heavy spending. He gained the name, The Merry Monarch. After his death in 1891, his sister, Lydia who changed her name to Queen Liliuokalani suceeded the throne, and who was overthrown in 1893 by a band of American Businessmen. |
| 12th May 2006 Franco | Mariposa Restraraunt. - From: Yes, We Have Beaches. The photo I titled as Matsonia should be corrected to Mariposa (Sp. for Butterfly). I was trying to think of the name, and know it was a name of a large ship that stopped in Hawaii in the old days. One was called Lurline, and others were Matsonia and Mariposa. |
| 2nd May 2006 Mike Hu | Pictures are interesting. - From: More on Local Foods. I'd like to see a better description so one knows where to go to see those places in person. For instance, where is the White Building located or the statue of King Kalakaua. What's the story on him being "elected" king? |
