Set off from Baltimore at 0900 and arrive Castletownbere at 1630. Sally and I arrived at the mooring about 0630 and brought her in to the small pontoon were we loaded on the gear. We had no wind and had to motor the whole way in sunshine. We went out around Cape Clear and rounded Mizzen in fairly calm conditions. Passed Sheeps head and then tried unsuccessfully to catch a few fish for dinner bit there were no bites.....It was a warm sunny day but no wind and constant motoring made it a bit tiresome.. Motored in through Pipers Sound and tied up at the main fishing wharf on to a raft of five other boats..... we made the obligatory visit to McCarthys Bar to watch the tail end of the Clare - Tip hurling game ... read more

Left the mooring in Baltimore about 2100 for a short hop out to Horseshoe Harbour on Sherkin. It was choppy with a fresh SW. We motored out and arrived at the entrance two hours after low water. The approach is to favour the port side until through the narrows and then turn to starboard to avoid a rock. Once through we dropped the anchor and FR settled in for the night in what is definetely on of the most perfect anchorages anywhere. Its a horseshoe (!) shape and open to the East. Very sheltered and this evening there was hardly a ripple on the water. A half moon lit the sky and we sat on deck til after midnight looking at amazing plankton with a torch. The water was like soup with tiny moving shapes. Next ... read more

Got FR in the water this afternoon. High tide was about 1800 and we were in about 1500. Tied up to a pontoon and went through that annual moment when you start the engine for the first time. Will it start? Is there cooling water coming out the back? It actually started the first turn of the key and ran beautifully all the way to Baltimore. It was a beautiful day for it and it took about 90 minutes. There were a few hairy moments when we were reading 1.5M on the depth but we never bottomed out. Found our mooring occupied by a Glenans boat so we took the first available and spent the night on that. Next day the Glenans people explained that they had lost a mooring in a storm and had to ... read more

The plan is to put FR in the water at Oldcourt Thursday afternoon (2nd June). The weathre forecast is for 25 degrees and the tides are high about 1730 so we should have a beautiful 90 minute motor to the mooring in Baltimore, west Cork. Its bank Holiday weekend so there should be a bit of a buzz about the place. We're planning to spend a few days on board getting FR in good shape. We have two dinghys. The small 1.5M (?) we'll take with us on our summer trip and the 4M (?) we'll leave at the mooring. I dropped the 30HP Mariner in for a service last week in Skib. I decided it was probably cheaper to spend money getting the outboard working properly than on getting surgery to my right arm! So ... read more
