Returned to Stellenbosch and visited the slow market. Lots of interesting foods and some crafts. The breakfast sandwich was fabulous and of course the Belgium "timbits" were a fitting way to top off breakfast. We spent the balance of the morning doing a part of a walking tour which covers numerous points of interest in the town. Saturday afternoon was wine tasting at; Waterford Winery -- a beautiful winery in which the presentation and tasting at the facility was wonderful. They also offered a wine and chocolate pairing which was an interesting combination. Unfortunately none of the wines were to our liking but we did buy the chocolate which was very good. Somerbosch Winery -- had lunch here which was excellent, gourmet food at cafeteria pricing. The wine was good particularly the Savignon Blanc Ernie Els ... read more

Our Hosts, Jim and Jane took us to Triggerfish Brewery which is managed by their friend Christine. It's a micro brewery situated in an industrial area that is scheduled for re-development. Sampled a wide variety of brews and settled on a couple which were very good. The beer market in South Africa appears quite similar to Canada. The mass market is dominated by big companies and consumtion of large established Brands is declining and being replaced to a large extent by micro breweries such as Triggerfish. The young beer drinkers don't want to drink their fathers beer brands. Also went on the hunt for local oysters for Friday night burger night. Found a local fish store close to the apartment and purchased a dozen from the East Coast (Indian ocean), out of the Knysna area. Unfortunately ... read more

Harry and Susan invited us to go with them to Stellenbosch which is in the heart of wine country. We had a very civilized lunch at the Spice Route Winery and toured the town. This is a very beautiful community with lots of interesting shops and restaurants. Ernie Els has a restaurant on historic Dorp Street called "the Big Easy". There is also a market here on Saturday's which we intend to visit and come back to spend more time touring the town. Also visited the town of Paarl but only drove through the area and didn't see much. Jack Nicklaus has a golf course/resort in the town which we will probably play eventually.... read more

We're gradually getting ourselves acquainted with the area and walked on the beech in Strand then visited a new Vodacom golf driving range that offers membership. We joined for $130.00 per person from January to March. They have great facilities, 2 restaurants, 3 putting greens, numerous tee boxes and sand traps etc. As part of the membership they offer group lessons. In addition, we signed Debra up for private lessons 12 x 1/2 hour lessons for $160.00, which was great value. The food at the restaurants are very reasonably priced, we shared a pizza and a large bottle of sparkling water for $11.00 with tip!! Close by is the Somerset West mall which is very large with upscale shopping etc. Debra is waiting for a rainy day which appear to be few and far between. We ... read more

Today we were invited to a picnic lunch at Vergelegen Winery by Harry and Susan, our friends from France who are "wintering" in South Africa and have done so since 2006. This was a fabulous introduction to South African Wine Country. There were tables set amongst Canphor trees which are quite majestic and some of them at this winery were over 300 years old. As you can see from the pictures, this winery had exceedingly attractive grounds that added considerable to the overall experience. The food and wine of course were "top drawer" and the weather was a beautiful summer day with a gentle breeze. We also visited a winery and coffee roaster in the same area called Lourensford which we had a wine tasting and we picked up freshly ground coffee. Overall a very pleasant ... read more

We'll after spending 46 1/2 hours (door to door) travelling we finally arrived at our Winter retreat on December 31st, Tuesday afternoon. Our hosts, Jane and Jim Yeomans invited us to a New Years get together at their place (Highcliff House) and we met some of their friends and family. We actually made it until midnight and therefore saw the New Year, at least in South Africa. (7 hours ahead of TO) It's been quite a long period of adjusting to the time zone change and we wouldn't recommend taking 2 back to back overnight flights. It's been several days and we still are experiencing interrupted sleep. Gordons Bay is about 1 hour outside of Cape Town with neighbouring communities such as Strand (5 km beech), Somerset West and about 40 minutes drive to Stellenbosch which ... read more

Saturday, May 26th Picked up at the Apartment in Port Soller by Pierre who is retired from the French Airforce and is a real character! Short flight to Barcelona, arrived at the Hotel Denit at around 2:00 pm and spent the balance the day orientating ourselves to the city. The Hotel is contemporary and central to all the attractions. The room is small but well appointed and the bed comfortable. The guest book shows a number of Canadians including 3 couples from Newfoundland! La Rambla promenade is a sight to be hold! Nothing like it we've seen! After wandering aimlessly looking for a place to have dinner, we discovered, La Calates, which is the oldest restaurant in Barcelona. It is a traditonal Catalania restaurant! The appetizers were encouraging but the main course disappointing. Sunday, May 26th. ... read more

Saturday, Sunday, Monday, - May 19th, 20th, and 21st. The weather has turned cooler with more clouds. We've had a couple of overnight thunder showers, however, the afternoons have been clearing. Quiet days just hanging around the apartment learning how to relax! Dana's better at this than Debra. Planning to go for our major hike tomorrow to Tuenti which is about a 5 hour hike to the north and we catch a boat to come back. Should have lots of pictures. Tuesday, May 22nd The water was too rough today and the boat that would have brought us back from our long hike was cancelled. We took the train to Palma to see Belver Castle which once was a Roman installation. Debra wanted it recorded that I made her walk to the Castle from the Train ... read more

Saturday, May 12th We can't believe how beautiful the weather is, consistently everyday. Quiet day today took a short hike up to a look out point and spent the balance of day hanging out around the beech and apartment. Sunday, May 13th Walked into Soller. There is an annual fair called ES Fira which is quite similar to small town Agricultural Fairs in Canada. There were lots of stalls selling handicrafts etc, and a small Midway for the kids. The only difference to Canada is the activities are spread throughout the ancient cobblestone streets of Soller. Walked back to Port Soller and hiked up to another look out point which had an impressive building called Meleta Refugi. It had great facilities for hikers and family picnics. We'll probably go back there with a picnic basket one ... read more

Monday, May 7, 2012 We arrived in Port Soller and got settled into our Apartment. Nice place just accross the promenad at the beech. We will be here for 2 1/2 weeks so it's nice to settle in for awhile. Port Soller is about 1/2 hour drive from Palma, the Capital city of Majorca. It's also only a few minutes away from the Village of Soller which is nestled amongst the Tramuntana range on the Northeast Coast of the Island. It's a very picturesque and quaint place. Wondered around the Port for awhile, got some supplies for the apartment and had a nice dinner in the apartment which overlooks the valley. Tuesday, May 8th, 2012 Walked to Soller(about 1/2 hour) and toured around for the day. Like most European towns, it has a Cathedral which forms ... read more
