The campsite today welcomed us with a swimming pool. Darren spent most of today splashing around and pretending to be a dolphin while Charmaine caught up on some more admin; mostly washing clothes. At 4 pm we all set off to watch the sunset over the magnificent Fish River Canyon, second largest canyon in the world to the Grand Canyon. The canyon forms the border between Namibia and South Africa. The view was magnificent and we could clearly make out the many different colours and patterns of the rocks within the canyon. We weren’t really that excited about seeing another sunset [View Full Entry]

Fishriver Canyon Sunset

Another early morning, 0400hrs to be precise! But the early rise was justified as we were to climb Dune 45 on the Sossusvlei and watch the sunrise. The morning was cool and crisp. At first glance the dune didn’t really look that high. But as we began our ascent we soon realised that it was going to be a tough climb as. Every footstep we took we felt ourselves sinking into the soft sand. It was indeed a difficult climb as the summit was also much higher than it looked from ground level. It was well worth the struggle to the [View Full Entry]

Up early again and once more we were on the road, this time to Sesriem. En route to the village of Sesriem we passed the Tropic of Capricorn, our first major point of longitude we passed overland. En-rout to Sesriem we paid a visit to Sesriem canyon, this was to be merely an entrée for the massive Fish River canyon to come, although beautiful and amazing in its own right. [View Full Entry]

Up early and we were ready for our flight into northern Namibia to visit a Himba tribe. Our journey started at Swakopmund International Airport (tee hee) where we were introduced to our pilot and our lovely little Cessna. Our flight across Namibia was nothing short of breathtaking with so many varied landscaped in this dry and dangerously arid country. The flight ended by circling Epupa falls and passing, only for a few seconds, into Angola. The pilot then made his descent into what can only be described as the smallest runway in all of Africa, so small, nobody on the plane [View Full Entry]

Today was basically another long drive. We all rejoiced at the fact that we would not be camping for the next two nights but would instead be lodging at a lovely place called Dune Lodge. It was situated on the Atlantic coast and we were appointed an en suite dormitory. Oh what bliss not to have to put up tents for another night. That evening we booked ourselves onto a Quad Biking tour of the surrounding sand dunes. This trip was just awesome, from performing roller coasters to catching some air; it was 2 and a half hours of pure exhilarating [View Full Entry]

Our transit stop between Etosha and Swakopmund is one that the majority of people on the trip have been looking forward to, in fact, for many it was probably the highlight of the trip! We arrived at Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park (www.cheetahpark.com) in the early afternoon; it was hot, hot, hot. We all waited in the bar, had a few cold ones and played with Ruby, the Jack Russell pup until the Cheetah arrived at the bar, yes, the Cheetah! Tzu (we think that is her name) is a wild Cheetah brought up by and in the company of people. She was [View Full Entry]

Prrrrrrrr!
Grrrrrr!

We embarked on another lengthy journey to the Etosha National Park in the north Namibia. Our campsite that evening was very nice. There were no upgrades left so we made do and erected our trusty dome tents where we would be spending the next two nights. Our campsite was situated beside a popular watering hole where many species of animals came to drink and where we would spend the next two days wildlife spotting. That evenings meal was not too appealing to Charmaines tastebuds so we went to the campsite restaurant where Charmaine indulged in a buffet of roast beef and [View Full Entry]

Elephants at the watering hole

We arrived at Windhoek at around 1030. We were given to 3 o’clock to go shopping, have lunch, use the internet etc etc etc. It was wonderful, we had lunch in KFC (woohoo!!), changed all of our money to Rand, commission free. We were quoted 14% commission in Zambia! It was a breath of fresh air for the two of us. We had a look around for a new Gerber multitool for Darren as his has mysteriously gone missing (all our stuff gets locked in our locker from now on). Windhoek was a place totally “out of place” in Africa. Any [View Full Entry]

Up at 0530 we were ready by 6 for our second game walk; we saw elephant, jackal, spurwing goose, buffalo and zebra. One of our guides reckoned he could communicate with the elephants and call them over, we were very sceptical. Back to the camp and we had toast for breakfast (no dishes required), before jumping back on our mokoro for the trip back. Umbrellas as far as the eye could see as everyone was shading themselves from the beating sun. We were treated to a couple of dances and songs by the mokoro polers during a rest stop; one was [View Full Entry]

Up early and ready for our night out in the Okavango Delta. We load up the truck and jump on, it’s a bit of a squeeze but no one seems to care as we are all quite excited. We arrive, after about an hour, at the mokoro (dug-out canoe) landing area. Our stuff is loaded on, we are introduced to Baps our mokoro poler, we squeeze into the little boat and quietly slip into the Delta. Baps pushes us along slowly, through natural channels between rushes and lilies, sometimes getting to into a conversation with another mokoro poler and crashing us [View Full Entry]
