Photos still to come... Porto - itīs not like we wanted to be charitable after the football Given that Spain to Portugal is an international journey, we checked at least three times whether we needed to reserve our seats. We were reassured on all those occasions that it really wasnīt necessary. Once we were on the train I could see why. A three carriage local service and about as basic as it gets. Luckily the views more than made up for it. We hugged the coast for long sections of the trip, and the difference between La Coruņaīs ugliness and the [View Full Entry]

Irun - where weirdly dressed men shoot pigeons in the street... Our arrival in Spain was about as disconcerting and unsalubrious as possible. Imagine if you will the well oiled machine that is the French rail network(hindsight is a marvellous thing), where facilities stretch as far as signs outlining the composition of carriages for each train. Imagine our increasing confidence in our ability to deal inelegantly but effectively with the French. Imagine the beauty and graciousness of the French towns in which we were staying. Hold that in your mind, and then imagine how we [View Full Entry]

Luxembourg Ab - After the dangers of kamikaze cyclists in the Netherlands, and the Dutch propensity for wrapping entire buildings (and themselves) in orange, we were looking forward to a different pace in Luxembourg and France. A touch of class even... Monday 19th was our first opportunity to use our interrail tickets. So we went long haul and headed to Luxembourg. It's a lovely city, perched on huge spars of rock between two rivers. And it is partly the fairytail city I had expected. However speaking to Sheena (my friend who lives in Paris) I should actually have been e [View Full Entry]

Dal - Scotland. Land where my father (and subsequent family) lives. Sun. Green. Friendly. Will that do for an entry? Suppose not. We travelled on the Caledonian Sleeper to Fort William, in a 6' x 4' cabin (cell), bunk beds and a sink. Just about room for ourselves and our baggage. I'm sure Japanese prisoners of war got more room in solitary confinement... Still, once installed in our bunks, the soothing rocking motion soon sent us to the land of nod. This must be the way forward for travel. Shut the curtains on London, wake up to hot coffee and pastries [View Full Entry]

Dal - Emigrating to New Zealand. Sounds simple enough. Four words. Since taking the decision to go life has been non-stop. luckily, sharing my life with a project manager of some repute (and a demon list writer) has made things easier, but with 9 days to go I'm filled with feelings of anticipation, excitement, and sadness. The plan is to go to NZ overland. Impossible? Almost, but we'll do the best we can, ticking off a few places along the way and hopefully giving something back as well as taking. For those of you who think I might be a bit [View Full Entry]
