We spent a short few days in Vientiane and it was a welcome city after the adventurous journey! As soon as we awoke later in the morning, John was very kind and found a better place for us to stay so the backpacks were flung over the shoulders for a quick jaunt up the street! We then took a walk around the city. I don’t know how much you could call it a city though – it seemed very small, easy to negotiate, chilled and boy was it quiet. So different to anywhere else we have been. The streets were relatively busy but you will not believe how calm everything felt. We jumped on the chilled bandwagon right away and felt right at home. For the rest of the day we basically relaxed but did it ... read more

We left Nha Trang by train heading for a city up the coast called Vinh. We had researched the best way to cross into Laos and there really didn’t seem to be a way that was any way decent. All our internet searching and Lonely Planet trawling led to stories of scams, being dropped off at borders or waiting all night on buses waiting on immigration to open but we did read of a bus that went from Vinh straight to Vientiane so we decided to brave it. The train journey was 20hours long. I didn’t really know what to expect cos as far as I could remember this was to be the longest continuous journey in one mode of transport that I have ever been faced with. We booked sleeper tickets – soft sleepers. This ... read more

Nha Trang is a beautiful city and the beach capital of Vietnam. Mountains lie behind the city and the beach stretches for kilometres along the coast. The water is clear blue from the beach out to meet the islands facing the city. It almost looks like the whole bay is enclosed by green hills, just heavenly! Nha Trang is also a place to chill, party and meet others who are either coming down from Hanoi or up from Saigon, all on the coastal route that is now becoming one of my favourite of all the countries. We spent four nights here and the place sort of seduced us. Between relaxing to planning our route into Laos, figuring out Vietnamese visa issues this place will still stand out as somewhere where it would be easy to go ... read more

Mui Ne is just what we needed after all the cities! We travelled by bus for about 3 hours to the coast. The scenery along the way was really nice with mountains meeting the sea, reminding me of home! The town itself is spread over a long strip of a few kilometres parallel to the beach. As a nice surprise we ended up being dropped off directly at the place we had been emailing and were met by the Australian owner, John, who had a nice room facing the sea ready to go, it couldn’t have been easier! The next 3 days were bliss. We basically settled into the place because it was so chilled and laid back. The beach is gorgeous and the sea was a lot chopper and wavier than previous beaches. The draw ... read more

Ok, maybe a bit longer than 60 seconds.... We travelled from Phnom Penh to Vietnam by bus. We were going to do a trip down the Mekong but the cost as well as the longer travel time/hassle changing boats to buses just wasn’t worth it! The border crossing was smooth as the bus staff got our passports stamped for us. When we were given them back to pass through the final immigration check it was a bit of a laugh because they try to call out all the names to give back the passports. There we all were standing in a large hall and even the immigration officials were laughing at some of the name pronunciations! After the immigration we headed out the road on the bus to be stopped by immigration/customs police. They came ... read more

Thankfully the bus journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was efficient! We stopped halfway for toilet etc. and noticed that there some delicious foods on display – cockroaches, beetles and the like. Seemingly the locals will eat anything, why waste nutritious varied alternatives eh! Also I think at this point I should mention that our introduction to Cambodia hasn’t been a true reflection of how nice the locals have been so far and our experience since that first bus journey have been much more positive. A smile goes a long way here, even if you are rejecting a service being offered or just walking along the street! We arrived in Phnom Penh and got a tuk tuk with a lovely man called Sai. We agreed with him that we would give him business the next ... read more

Our first introduction to Cambodia was when we crossed the border from Thailand into the town of Poipet. Just as you arrive into the town the sprawl of casinos awaits and this is where the Thais who want to gamble flock to at the weekends. Immediately the country seemed different to the other places we have been before. The streets were busy like other places but more with the locals pushing fruits and veg along and they were piled high for the market just over the border. The roads were dusty and people were using masks or scarves to keep the dust out. The immigration was quick but only because the officials have made up their own “express” charge on top of the visa price. Pay 300baht and you get your visa in 3 minutes. Don’t ... read more

So we got a ferry from Koh Samui to the island of Koh Tao on 9th February. As soon as we pulled up to the pier the crystal clear waters and wooden seaside shacks looked exactly like what I think I’ve been “expecting” or “looking for” from our second trip to Thailand. We had no accommodation booked but were in contact with someone from The Buddha View Dive Resort (on John’s friend, Kevin’s recommendation, as he is a few days ahead of us) about maybe doing a PADI dive course for 4 days but we had to get the boat before confirming anything, oops! So when we arrive there are a mass of locals with signs for all the different dive centres. Basically Koh Tao is the place for diving around here so it’s a bit ... read more

Well what can I say? I have always wanted to go and it was me really pushing for it on this trip and I’m not speaking for anyone but me, I’m so delighted we did go. We got a boat which cost 600baht each from Koh Samui at 6pm, knowing that we could take a return boat at any time between 1am and 7am so it was all sorted! We were collected by minivan from our hostel and met our partners in crime for the night Dustin and Ines! Who would of known that an American, half Moroccan half French and two paddies would hit it off and end of partying the night away in Thailand! I’m not going to mention too much about other people as I haven’t asked their permission but let’s just say ... read more

Ok I’m just going to be honest we really didn’t like Koh Samui….. We stayed on Chaweng Beach, it’s the main beach on the island and you can see why as it is nice and there are a few waves etc. but it’s just too touristy. The second day we moved to a nicer place to sleep for not too much more money called the Loft. It was nice, more like a hotel and we needed that because we hadn’t much time for the town! The beach strip is around 7km long and it is taken over by resorts. Parallel to the beach is the main road which is again lined for the whole strip with tourist shops/bars/restaurants and is bustling with every westerner possible roaming the streets on their rented scooter or minivans doing collections ... read more
