The Final Blog I hope this is the last missive I'll send out. Only major drama on the way home would provide the occasion to post again and we don't want that. I don't have much to say about Mt Cook since it was in the clouds the day we were there. It was pouring down rain but we stayed in the DOC camp there and listened to the frustrated mountaineers grump. Example: ALL Americans hate ALL Canadians! Really? I don't care for Celine Dion but I love Steve Martin... Near Wanaka are a number of glaciers but we chose one of the lesser tramped ones, the Rob Roy Glacier at Mt. Aspiring Natl Park. It was a relatively short hike (10K) but with killer scenic value! A waterfall that got blown back up, a glacier ... read more

Island Hopping We've traveled to the South Island now. Our last North Island time was a lovely day and night in downtown Wellington, which is a beautiful city. I got lots of time to meander through the national museum, Te Papa, as we were camped in the parking lot behind it. Had to be the most unique place I've ever camped and that's saying a lot. I could definitely live in Wellington. Actually, it's getting to be a lame joke that every town we go through I make that statement & I mean it! We boarded the ferry for the 3 hr ride to the South Island through the Queen Charlotte Sound. Awesome big mountains coming right down to the blue-green ocean. The ferry was pretty luxurious compared to the more commuter-type ferries I've ridden in ... read more

28/29 December 2010 My first day driving on the left. Super hard, especially in driving rain. It takes a lot of concentration. We left Golden Springs and drove down to Taupo. It was raining and blowing so we spent some time souvenir shopping. Taupo sits on the largest lake in NZ but the clouds were so low we couldn't see much of it. There were 4 foot waves on it, though. We drove down to Tongariro National Park and got checked in to our next Holiday Park. The Discovery Lodge (yet another amazing lodging) was chosen for its proximity to the Crossing, supposedly the best one-day hike in New Zealand. Hike stats: 12 miles, 3500 feet up and 5000 feet down. The next morning we caught the 5:45 shuttle to the trailhead. The Tongariro Crossing climbs ... read more

December 26/27 2010 It was hard to leave Papamoa. Christmas day spent there was peaceful and beautiful, but we were craving adventure. We headed southwest to Rotorua, one of the prime geothermal areas of the North Island. We began to smell it long before arriving. Rotten egg gas to most people but Hydrogen Sulfide according to our resident Chemistry student. There was a lot to do there but we chose to raft the highest commercially run falls in the world. While the run was rather short, it did produce. While I managed to keep my composure, Rob screamed like a little girl. Our Holiday Park (Golden Springs) was amazing. They had a private hot-stream with soaking pools with the caveat that you couldn't put your head under water (amoebic meningitis). A word on the NZ Holiday ... read more

Christmas Day Since last post we drove across the Coromandel Peninsula from the Firth of Thames to the Eastern side of the North Island. It was a steep and winding road, which we believe will become a common thread on this trip. We hiked down to a beach called the Cathedral Cove and swam and took photos. The "cathedral" itself was roped off due to danger from falling rocks. On Christmas eve we pulled into the Papamoa Beach holiday park. Our site is directly overlooking the ocean. We slept with the back of the campervan open to the surf and the sea breeze. Sweet! On Christmas morning a gentleman laboriously dug foot deep letters in the sand (see photo) for all to enjoy. We surmised he was either a civil engineer or a surveyor. Turns out ... read more

The Adventure Begins! We're finally in New Zealand. There was some drama with the flights but not dramatic enough to recount here. 15 hours after Los Angeles we landed in Sydney. It was quite early by tourist standards but we took the train down to Circular Quay then bravely hoofed over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Awesome views of the Opera House. We cruised over to Kirribillie where we hung out in a beautiful park and Anthony juggled three-ball. He's an awesome juggler and it entertains everyone who passes by. Its a good conversation starter and already we've met some great fellow tourists: Germans, Kiwis, Aussies & Brits. After 10 hours in Sydney we again boarded the bird for Aukland. Around mid-night we arrived in "the city of sails", found the hotel and passed out. My sleep-deprived ... read more

This is a test travel blog I'm still stuck in Colorado; working my brains out. See photo! For a rather small instrument you wouldn't think it would have the juice to cause so many problems in my life: hair loss, sleep loss, sunny-disposition loss. Least it pays well.... read more
