We left Ma Wan island and dived in the more central part of HK. Following Chris's trusty guidelines, we headed to 10,000 Buddha monastery, built on a hillside and overlooking Sha Tin. The views at the top made the climb even more worthwhile! ... read more

Yesterday started with a bang, literally, as claps of thunder and flashes of lighting were bouncing around the islands. Celine was out swimming in the bay at 7am with huge drops falling, very impressive, comfortable as well when the water is that warm! This was our first foray into the big city as we caught the ferry to central (hk island) and connected on the ferry Hong Kong's 3rd biggest island Lamma. Central was bustling, tall skyscrapers by the waterside. The sun dried up the clouds on our arrival to Lamma and we were soon hitting the 30 degrees mark. We went on a round trip around the south part of the island, with steep climbs and gorgeous vistas over the bay. The downside is the huge quantity of plastic washed up on the shore. We ... read more

Friday night we met up with our friends Frankie and Amy, who are our friend Chris's parents. Frankie and Amy live on Ma Wan island where we've been staying and know the area well. They invited us to a traditional seafood restaurant owned by local fishermen. Even though we'd not met for a long time, we got on straight away. The food was fresh and plentiful and the drinks were flowing: The Alsace gewurztraminer perfectly accompanied the rock fish and razorfish, 2 delicacies none of us had ever tried. The boys were just as happy with TsingTao, the local Hong Kong beer. Frankie guided us around the old fishing village before beer and icecream completed this very full day! Thank you Frankie &Amy for your hospitality. Have a great trip to Taiwan!... read more

Asia September 29th 2017

Our first full day started with a classic visit, one which Scott and me had been to before but new to Jerry: The big Buddha! Jerry treated us to the cable car ride, which was a novelty for us. The views were commanding over the island, lush green steep slopes, lantau peak and even a waterfall! The Big Buddha is right next to Po Lin monastery, which houses 10,000 Buddha. The detailing of the carvings and the vibrant colours stop me everytime. This being a Buddhist monastery, the food is vegetarian, and the choice is wide! I tried various buns, black sesame paste is a winner, hands down. The monastery is also home to feral cattle and buffalo, who are a great hit with the tourists. The statue of the Buddha is at the top of ... read more

Today we went to Le Shuan (Happy Mountain) with Lu and her friend Qi (Chi). It's a 2 hour drive from Chengdu through Chines countryside. Field after field and small villages. Arrived in Le Shuan, which is a natural heritage site. The highlight is a huge Buddha carved out of the rock face that drops down to the river. The Buddha is over 400ft high. Either side of it is a path winding down the cliff, across his feet and back up the other side. But the wait is about 3 hours to get onto the path, so we took a boat on the river and got the best views of the Buddha! Back to Chengdu and the last dinner with Lu and Qi. Been a great holiday with some fantastic adventures. Thanks Tibet and Chengdu, ... read more

Some supermarket shopping for Yak milk tea before heading to the airport to fly back to Chengdu. 2 hour journey instead of 42 hours!!! Group photo of everyone, before leaving Tibet. Went for something to eat then Scott, Jerry, Pokman and Kenny went to see the Chengdu opera performing the "Face Changing" particular to Chengdu. About 80 minute performance of a combination of theatre, dance, laser show, doll puppetry, and the actors and dolls changing their facemasks in a flash! Very enjoyable!... read more
