Day 3 – UNDERWAY! A feeling like no other. The last time I set sail, my beloved and be-hated USS MEMPHIS was leaving the yards in Portsmouth, NH bound for her final 3 years of service to the greatest Navy in the world in Groton, CT. The grey paint and cold steel were the same. The sound powered phone circuits, the unique and coarse language of sailors were the same. Chow lines and etiquette, even the ice maker was the same. But this cruise was different. I was the rider, expected to stay out of the crew’s way and focus on the science and data collection. Needless to say, this was a stark contrast to the roughneck camaraderie I shared with the MEMPHIS boys, where we cursed the riders for breathing our air, eating our food, ... read more

Hello from the Pacific Northwest! Finally found myself a little downtime to write about what has been going on here. I arrived into Seattle-Tacoma airport around 9:45 on Sunday night and took a cab up to the University of Washington (U-district) where I met the boat (R/V Thomas G. Thompson). I was pretty beat from a week+ of vacation (spoken: partying), so I didn’t have a lot of energy to explore, but I was able to find my stateroom (yeeeaaaa I had a stateroom, woot! woot! photo 001(2)), the crew’s mess and the main lab where I will be spending most of my time (photo 037). My roommate John was nice enough to make my rack up with bedding so I didn’t wake him up when I got here, so I just hit it and tried ... read more

After realizing that in this whirlwind return to school that I'll never catch my tail, I figured I might as well crank out this last entry now before it gets any later. We were without either power, electricity or both on days 7 and 8, and day 9 was the flight back which coincided with St. Patty's Day. So forgive the tardiness, but hopefully that line of excuses suffices one way or another. There is still plenty of geology to cover, so let's get to it! Day 7: Our first stop was along a roadside carved through a U-shaped valley.... hint, hint. The lateral moraines rising up from Bishop Creek was the last piece of evidence we needed to certify that this was the result of glaciation (photo 1088). From there we followed the creek ("crick" ... read more

After a brief hiatus, I'm on the flight home now and will post the rest. Hope you enjoy, I know we all sure did. Day 6! 14 March 2012. As I said at the end of last night’s blog, there is nothing to report from last night because I spent an inordinate amount of time writing it, so I just went to bed. With so much geology in store, let’s get right into today, shall we? Our first stop was at a geothermal plant where we would encounter geothermal vents, or fumaroles, that are evidence of an existing magma chamber which could be used to generate electricity (photo 1048). Fumaroles escape from through fissures (cracks) within the earth (in this case, it is a crustal magma chamber somewhere on the order of 8-10km deep) An overly ... read more

Day 5! Wednesday, March 13, 2012 (I decided I’m going to start adding dates for posterity) As is becoming customary, I will close out my blog from the night before. We arrived at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab (SNARL) just as the sun was starting to set. We were a little disappointed because of our failed attempts at seeing the petroglyphs and Owens River Valley, but on a trip like this, morale doesn’t stay low very long. The immediate remedy, in fact, came from the Coso Volcanic Field group that prepared an Italian meal which would’ve nearly made Grandma Aquilina proud. We listened to Dan Dawson, the Director at SNARL speak briefly on what the research lab is, how it plays into the bigger picture of California’s education system, the opportunities it holds for graduate ... read more

Day 4! To tie the bow on last night, we made a fire right when we got back. Forecast called for higher winds and cooler temperatures than the previous night, so Sid graciously purchased a mobile home where almost everyone would sleep. I decided to diverge from the masses and sleep in the van. It was warm and comfortable, and an overall great choice! The wood is so incredibly dry out here, we were able to start a fire without a match both last night and again this morning. The plan was to cook over the open flame. Sid and the TA’s purchased a bunch of meat (steaks, chicken, sausage) and veggies to just grill up and chow. It turned out the house had a huge propane grill, so with the exception of the chicken, potatoes ... read more

Day 3! I’ll start by closing out last night’s log…. We made it to our campgrounds where there was a little diner opened for us to grab a quick bite. I got a bacon cheeseburger and the best tasting beer I’ve had in quite some time. It was just a Sierra Nevada, but after a long day in the field it tasted like nectar of the gods. The best part of it all was I was able to get 3G at the exact moment the Sabres were headed into a shootout vs. Ottawa. When Ennis netted the game winner, I cheered in solitude and raised my glass! Weeeeeeeee (are currently driving on a bumpy road, so I ‘m leaving the typo for effect) got back to set up camp. My tent is in kind of rough ... read more

Day 2! Well, I survived the night….. kinda. Sleeping out under a desert sky peppered with stars, planets and a harvest moon is quite an experience. However, if I were to do it over again, I would wear more than just a t-shirt and a light blanket, and I would DEFINITELY check my air mattress for holes. That being said, I woke up around 1AM, flat on the 2x4’s of the observation deck with numb toes and visible breath. It was at this point I decided to swallow my pride and head inside. Luckily, the girls downstairs made some room for me to ride out the rest of the night. Because Sid wanted to be on the road by 9, wake-up was going to be around 0730. I decided to get up around 0600 to catch ... read more

After an eye piercing 5AM wake-up, our trip began. I could’ve done without shutting down Haakons with the MilVets last night, but I woke up with steam in the tank and excited for the adventure! As is customary, I arrived early to help lug the bags from the Faculty lounge in Schermerhorn down to the shuttles that were waiting to take us to JFK. After a few phone calls to a few oversleeping, post-midterm Ivy Leaguers, we herded the cattle and made our way from Columbia’s front gate to JFK. Weighted down like pack mules, we arrived with a healthy 15 large duffle bags of gear to accompany all of our personal necessities. We checked into our flight to the tune of some good news! Using my military ID, I was able to get the group ... read more

Night before the trip, just wanted to have a dry run for the blog! All the gear is packed from rock hammers and head lamps to tarps, tents (my tent of course goes nowhere without the luxury of a queen-sized air mattress) and thanks to every member of my family, 9 pairs of smart wool socks! Oh, where I'm headed, right. This trip is a geological excursion to the Eastern Sierras and will include a comprehensive survey of Death Valley National Park. I will try and update the blog as much as possible with what we're studying, what we've found, pictures, and would the blog be complete without general Dale Gump banter? Our itinerary looks something like this: Friday March 9, meeting the team at the gates of Columbia at 6AM and hopping a 930 Flight ... read more
