11th April Breakfast, washing then wifi time. I went to see the lady on reception about the police, no joy & we have to ring the police station where the prosecution will be launched. No doubt on the day, we’ll ring & no-one will have a scooby doo why we’re ringing. I hoping that come the day the campsite will let us use their phone & one of them can speak English & help translate. Then David arrived & he drove us into Lagos. He has a small IQ... as in Toyota IQ, a super little car. Parked up & had a leisurely wander through the town & went for a coffee outside a restaurant overlooking the bay & 6km of sandy beach. Overall, we summarised our lives since we last saw each other whilst David ... read more

10th April A cloudy start, packed up & left for the south west. We diverted to get supplies & the road brought us back on track through forests of eucalyptus & cork oak. We came out of the hills into orange groves & there was obviously blossom about as the perfume was smashing. In this part of the world there are plenty of motorhomers but I think most camp wild as they aren’t in the sites much. As we approached the site there were plenty of walkers & camping cyclists & some hitchhikers. Once again the site is in pine woods, very rustic but nice all the same. I later went to reception & asked the lady, who was born in Germany (don’t) & multilingual, if she would help find out with the police exactly what ... read more

9th April Another beautiful day. A lazy start, picked up the bread from the bar & now see with WiFi that US, post Syria, has now sent warships to the Korean peninsula. Must buy some shares in the company that manufactures Tomahawk missiles. It appears this POTUS doesn’t mess about. Interesting how China said it understood the raid on Syria.. methinks China wants the US to hit N Korean bunkers to save them the trouble, keep their hands clean but keep it as a buffer zone. We’ll never know of course. The S. China Sea issue soon... Yesterday Cathy burnt her feet in the sun, so we decided to stay on site & chill, read & enjoy the day in the warm. But we saw & heard pigeons, ring doves, cuckoos, blackbirds, woodpeckers, bee eaters to ... read more

8th April Nice lie in after waking early, always feels better doesn’t it? Bikes out & rode to reception to buy the machine token, complained about the dogs, came back & wrote up the blog for the last day or two. We took the bikes because it’s a 10 minute walk to reception, the site being so big...but almost deserted. After lunch we went off to the local beach, a 15 minute walk away. Wow! Beautiful bay / beach with enormous rollers coming in – there were a couple off surfers in the next bay. I’d forgotten how massive the Atlantic waves are. There were maybe 18 people on the beach, but it was Saturday....in April. Probably around 25* We came back & took the bikes down to reception to get the WiFi & publish the ... read more

Up early, left the table & chairs out & off. 1 hour later the Dyson said we have arrived – next to field outside Santiago, jolly good. Idea – get phone, switch data roaming on, try Google maps....eta voila, sorted. We were only a few kilometers away. Go into the hospital, find the office location on the ground floor, go to reception first to make sure; no, he took us outside, gestured round the building. Off we go, into an other office round the back. No, she took us outside & pointed to where it was. Next to the mortuary, complete with hearse & coffin outside. Into office to be told that there are no doctors in the morning, he starts at 3pm, very sorry. Oh Joy. So, we were going to go back home & ... read more

Realised now out of shock that Cathy was bitten twice, hip & lower ribs, me once, lower ribs. What an awful night. The dogs were barking all night & we were restless not just because of our sore wounds but reliving the nightmare of the attack. This could be a very sweary blog but I’ll resist...maybe I forgot to mention that whilst we were waiting in the hospital yesterday, a lady who had come in with her ancient mum started talking to me/us...we gestured that we didn’t understand. She took this as clue 1 to carry on. I became so fed up with her I got my phone out, switched on roaming data, typed into Google translate “ We have no scooby doo what you are saying, sorry” She read it, now in Portuguese, & took ... read more

5th April We woke up to a heavy dew & fog which hadn’t been forecast so we had a lie in whilst I wrote up this rubbish. It cleared up by midday so after some hand-washing we decided to walk into town, about 2 miles away. Turns out that it was a bad decision; we had only walked 100 yards from the campsite when 2 big dogs ran out from a garden, one of which bit Cathy on the fleshy part of her hip. Trying to defend ourselves, the same dog bit me too on the hip. Very, very frightening & it could have been so much worse. We eventually & thankfully got away, very, very shaken. A member of staff called the police & an ambulance. After a brief statement as we asked to press ... read more

4th April The tablet changed the name to Montenegro, it’s Monte in case you’re looking. I set the alarm for 7am & we’d have been away for 9.30am except the that electricity hook up box was locked – I asked a chap from the site who was nearby & off he went, not to return. Had to go to reception.. Set the Dyson for Barcelos & away for 9.20am. Dropped into a massive Supermarche on the way. We couldn’t find the local one but looking for it gave us a view of enormous Atlantic breakers coming in. Cathy got very excited when we saw a huge ceramics factory but it was dilapidated...& into Barcelos. I should have known better but ended up ‘threading the needle’ through a couple streets rammed with parked cars. We didn’t see ... read more

Europe » Portugal April 3rd 2017

3rd April Woke up to a beautiful morning. The hippies left soon after we stepped out & we’re the only foreigners here. When we planned the trip we thought we would use non toll roads in Portugal as we had read that they can be expensive for a motorhome but Cathy has bottled it as, obviously, there are more instructions to understand ie get wrong. So, after a quick bit of web searching we found that from the available options we needed a prepayment card as we were nowhere near a place where we could get anything else. So, off on the bikes after lunch to the post office or CTT. On the way, there were loads of decent sized fish in the tidal river, possibly sea bass, close to the edge / rocks below the ... read more

2nd April Woke to be totally confused with times. We’re so close to the border our phones still were ‘tuned’ to Spanish times & trying to set the times via the web was frustrating & more confusing. Cut a long story short...we slept in & still got up earlier than planned; work that out. Put more washing on & had breakfast, put a line up then jumped on the bikes into Caminha via the walkway/ cycle path away from the road. But first we went to the local beach which apart from two fishermen was, probably understandably, deserted. As we approached the town, we saw, more heard, what must have been 100 motorbikes coming down the road in roughly 2 groups. As we walked our bikes into town we heard one of the groups parking up...the ... read more
