freeloader So it WAS worth doing the lines - I'm glad.
It does you good to see how the other half lives - that will teach you not to try to freeload in future.
Nasca It's gotta be done! If you don't do it you probably will always wish you had. I take it you mean a flight of some sort as I understand they are only completely visible from the air and there's not much to see from the ground. PS Surely they sell razors in Lima!

Pablo Angel Hay dude! Just wanted to say thanks for going to South America as your trip inspired me to pick 'Pablo Angel' in my 4th race at the dogs. I had lost on my first three... but Pablo, well, what can i say, came in first and recouped the money i'd lost on the first 3! - Bonza. Keep up the exploring Amigo. B
hmm According to the bbc you are in the midst of riots and protests over a US trade agrements. Hope you are staying out of trouble !!
My wogoe challenge is therefore to stay out of trouble this week, until I can think of a better challenge
Wogeo Challenge I'm so disappointed with Paul not finding you a challenge - how about you trying this one? The first Tuesday of every month the "Raging Cyclists" cycle through Santiago to try to get more cycle paths. Why not borrow a bike and join the Movimiento de Furiosos Ciclistas on Tuesday? You look like you could do with the exercise!
soul crushing there's probably a reason that chileans suffer from the highest stress and depression rates in latin america, and this may have something to do with what you sense is a certain "souless" feeling from santiago. you may be on to something. hope things get better. cheers!
German Girls Hmmm..... Well, I've finally got my act together and sorted out some internet access! It staggers me that I'm in one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world and I'm still living in the Dark Ages. Well, it sounds like you've been having a hoot brother! Don't worry about the odd occassional wipeout of a weekend, it just makes you appreciate the good ones even more.
When you coming to grace my neck of the woods with the Billy magic?
Simon
100% Well done but if you're so damn clever why didn't you get 100% like your sister did in her first Spanish test? You are getting so much more practice.
Santiago -Chili Yeah well; perhaps there is not much to see in Santiago. I was very dissapointed with my trip to Chile I though maybe Chile was a little more fun than Bolivia, but found the two countries very similar. BS-As was indeed a blast I had an awesome time and also attended to a football match. No idea who was playing but it was great !! Brazil NO words to describe this gorgeaus country. Peru lovely but some places were a little ackward. Ecuador nice small country very green in the andes. Bolivia boring - Chile boring. I would suggest Brazil for all travelers that would like to have fun, Argentina for the ladies lol and Peru for its culture. Have a nice one Roy here Manchester-England
around santiago del nuevo extremo been reading up on your travels. yes, Stgo is much more lowkey than BA, but there's still plenty to do. check out the bellavista area, between the big cellphone building and the cerro san critobal. lots of restaurants and clubs. there are some nice bars in providencia too (i liked la liguria. i recommend a pitcher of white wine with either peaches or chirimoyas, called ponche. there's also red wine and stawberries called borgoNa).
barrio suecia in providencia is a bit gimicky but good for a night out. there are some bars and clubs around plaza NuNoa too.
i liked a club called blondie on the alameda, near the republica metro stop. there are also lots of little low key places near plaza brasil, just north of where blondie is. ask your host family how to get there.
chileans in general have a milder temperment than argentines or brazilians. they don't like to call attention to themselves. chilean society is more conforming than most others in latin america, more conservative if you will.
chile is the least corrupt country in latin america they work the 2nd longest hours after south koreans. while tropical people like to party, chileans are more serious and have a better work ethic. chileans are sometimes described as "cold" by other latinamericans. the country itself is infintely more organized and better managed than argentina. that said, chileans love to party, eat, drink and be merry. like in argentina, you don't go out before midnight and don't come home before 6am. they have a quick-witted, ironic sense of humour, lots of play on words. GOOD LUCK WITH CHILEAN SLANG AND IDIOMS.
NEVER BRIBE A CARABINERO! argentines bribe cops all the time, don't do it in chile.
chileans are a bit pessimistic and negative. they will tell you how dangerous santiago is, to be careful, etc. santiago is the safest capital on the continent. however, be careful of pick pockets. take the same precautions i hope you've been taking in argentina.
have fun!
