I made the horrible mistake of reading the children's bios before bed the other night...some of these kids have been through tragedies far beyond what any child should witness or experience. Many of them, after there own parents died of AIDS related causes were living with relatives who abused them severely. I laid awake for hours, my heart aching, and then all of a sudden I felt tremors from a nearby earthquake shaking my bed. And then the next day the volcano on the horizon erupted! (Sulfur, not lava) Supposedly there is still more to come too. It last erupted a couple of years ago and the village was covered in ash. I don't think we are in any sort of danger or anything,...my curiosity is more powerful than my fear anyway. So life goes on ... read more

Wow...where to begin?! I guess I'll start where I left off...so my ride pulled up about an hour late and eagerly hopped out of the car to help me with my bags, forgetting to put the car in park, which then rolled into a tree. No big thing...more embarrassment on his behalf than any thing else. Once inside the car it was clear that the car had been through far worse than a ding in the bumper. (it reminded me ana, of the story about your journey in cambodia in the van with no dash board) Anyway, we start off on our long drive to Karatu, leaving kilimanjaro behind us, and as I'm in the back seat sweltering with no knob to roll down the window, the driver presumably picks up on my distress and kindly ... read more

I made it to Tanzania!! Flew into Mt. Kilimanjaro airport last night under a full moon and starry skies. Arrived at the Outpost Lodge in Arusha an hour later, exhausted and dehydrated, unsure of my surroundings in the darkness all around me. Taken to my room, I didn't dare step outside to try to find water or food, for fear of the tigers outside my door....actually there were no tigers, just howling winds and avacado seeds falling onto my thatch roof and trees slamming into my windows...you can just imagine in my delirious state...I'm thinking it's got to be tigers! Needless to say, after crawling under my mosquito net and lying with my eyes wide open for hours, I slept very little before waking up at sunrise to peek out my door at the amazing beauty ... read more

My second day in Amsterdam, my new favorite hobby is wandering around aimlessly until something draws me in. It tends to happen every quarter-mile or so, and Amsterdam isn't too big, so I've been covering a lot of ground. Solo traveling definitely has it's perks! I feel so blessed that I am in a place in my life that I can enjoy such an experience. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about how incredibly fortunate I am,...it's no secret that I come from from one of the most loving, giving, big-hearted families left in the world. The love that filled my childhood is what continues to fuel me today. It's what drives me to share my blessings with everyone I can. I have way too much love for one person to ... read more

Here is where I try to sell myself through my writing, so that you feel inspired to follow along on my adventures. For my family, and all of you who know I’m not so much a phone person, it’s the best way to keep in touch while I’m away. You can post comments and send me messages and stuff on the site too. How is that different from email? Well, to be honest, I'm not sure how many personal emails I will get to write during my stay in the Tanzanian Children’s Village. They have limited electricity, the only source of which are solar panels, and given that I arrive at the start of the rainy season, there may be a lot of cloudy days with no electricity. I’m imagining us all running around with headlamps ... read more
