24th March 2005 Bangkok, Thailand. Last night was lovely, Brooke, Scott and I went to the Imperial Shopping Centre, very western, and had dinner and a movie and they're really great people, I like them a lot. And it was such a relief to know - no, to SEE - that there are familiar things in this country, like proper Western department stores and Cinemax's and such forth. Then earlier today we went to Khao San Rd by Thai canal boat and then a taxi. The boat was fun - you've got to be super fast at jumping on and off [View Full Entry]

Khao San Road during the day

March 23rd 2005 Bangkok, Thailand. Wow, where to start? 21st March 2005. Brisbane, Australia. Am so glad I decided to spend first night of Big Adventure in Brisbane. Everything is unfamiliar but still Australian, still understandable. Spent yesterday and most of today with Jessie G, my old school pal, who's a Brisbanite, wandering about the city. The public transport system puts Cairns to shame. I don't think you can go three minutes without spotting a bus going somewhere, and when one was actually five minutes late there was a lot of consternation amongst the locals, whereas in Cairns we pretty much plan our schedules around the guarantee that [View Full Entry]

Peace Pagoda in Brissie

Well, who would have believed it, but my big day finally arrived. After a last-minute, all-night, panicked packing frenzy, I found myself at the airport, well ahead of schedule, yet still, in the end, seemingly without the time for proper goodbyes. Mostly, perhaps, because it really did not seem like goodbye, not then. But later, as the plane taxied off with Janis Joplin's "Leaving on a Jet plane" crooning dramatically from my mp3 player, it finally occurred to me that the view outside my window was not one which I would be seeing again anytime soon, nor those dearly beloved faces [View Full Entry]
