Geo: 42.5936, -5.56992There are two things pilgrims always talk about: injuries and snoring. All will admit to injuries or blisters, but rarely will anyone admit to snoring! Except for Ian from Australia who says that he snores on his back, his side or his stomach and if you see him entering a dorm room, go to another room!Well, you don't usually have an option of what bed you get because they are almost always assigned and, as a couple, you usually get lower and an upper. Last night we had only eight in our room, but Jeanine from California had one of those machines that wake you up in the case your snoring interrupts your breathing. She was on one side and a very nice Polish guy on the other! We did not have a chance! Our ... read more

Geo: 42.5937, -5.56989Lights came on at 6:00, but as usual, people were stirring at 5:00. Dave was up about 5:30 to put ice on his shin. We had a quick breakfast of yogurt and a bar and headed out about 7:00 - pitch dark! There were two routes out of town, and in the dark, we were not sure which we took. It was a real struggle finding the Camino arrows and it didn't ease the anxiety that we saw no one.One route would have a village in 5 kilometers, the other over 8. When we knew we had gone well over 5, we finally knew which route we were on. Our first and only coffee was in Calzadilla de los Hermanillos. We filled our water bottles and headed out for the 18 kilometer slog across the longest ... read more

Geo: 42.3863, -5.07905We took advantage of our private room and slept until 8:04 -- unheard of! We were the last ones to leave and since there was no real coffee maker there, we left without breakfast. We took a few pictures of Moratinos and started our 18th day! Before we knew it, we arrived at San Nicolas (2.2 km) and had a couple coffees and a chorizo/egg/ cheese sandwich. It was a cute place playing Johnny Cash songs and our Spanish Whistler showed up AGAIN. The only problem with the place is that it was Sunday and a lot of the day hiking/bus riding "pilgrims without packs" we're there. We noticed that they stamped their credencials about 4 times! We enjoyed the short day and strolled into Sahagun for our second breakfast. Before town, we entered an area ... read more

Geo: 42.3865, -5.07881Only three of us in the room and the 3rd was a woman; what are the odds of a heavy snorer, on the Camino, pretty high?! She snored lik a sailor! Dave was stirring about 6:30 and turned the light on about 6:45. After breakfast of yogurt, peach and granola bar, we were on the Camino by 7:30. We had a coffee at the last bar/restaurant in town and began the long 17 kilometer trek to the first town. It was flat as a table, very little change in scenery with one oasis stop in the middle, which we passed by. The significant event is that we passed the half way point of our Camino!!! There were not bells or marching bands, but a big psychological lift that it was downhill the rest of ... read more

Geo: 42.3865, -5.07879The six of us in the room were relatively quiet last night. We had decided that we would turn on the lights at 6:00, but there was one French woman who was packed up and out before the lights came on.We went down to the dining room and although we only ordered two cafe con leche, we automatically got an orange juice, a coffee and a plate of toast with butter and jam. White bread is not what we needed, but being frugal pilgrims, we ate most of it! At 2.70 euro, this was not a bargain! We had not left the Albergue the night before (and we should have) so we had not seen any of this cute little village. In the dark, we tried to take pictures of the Rollo de la Justicia ... read more

Geo: 42.2581, -4.34649This morning was a perfect example of why we don't understand people packing up at 5:30am, and waking everyone else with their clattering. Three of the six of us were packed out and gone by 6:00. Dave went down at 6:30 to retrieve laundry and they, along with a 1/2 dozen others, were in the albergue's cafe, waiting for it to open! All this to walk an hour in the dark. After coffee at Albergue Santa Brigida, walked in pre-dawn light through rolling hills. We soon came upon the convent/hospital ruins of San Anton, a Middle Ages structure that is partially intact. We hope our photos show even a fraction of how impressive the place is. We stopped for our 2nd coffee of the day at Castrojeriz. Another town with a Middle Ages church, but ... read more

Geo: 42.2583, -4.34647The 30-bed dorm was maybe the noisiest yet with at least six to eight synchronized snorers! Neither of us slept past 2:00am. We have never had this happen before, but lights came on at 6:00! Actually, this was better than people sneaking around with their headlamps on and shining their lights in your face.We packed up and went down to the kitchen for our yogurt, a peach and a breakfast bar.We were on the Camino by 7:00, much too dark for our liking. It is difficult to find our Camino yellow arrows plus you miss the scenery, whether it be urban or countryside. Leaving Burgos we passed wide tree-lined boulevards and parks, but because of the darkness, we couldn't fully appreciate them.On the edge of the city, we spotted a coffee place a block ... read more

Geo: 42.2582, -4.34639Private rooms are grrr-eat, but we would miss a lot of the "ambience" if we slept in them all the time! But, because we had a full kitchen, Dave was able to ice his shin in the morning and it was pain free, as it has remained, at least through Wednesday. We got up late because there were no pilgrims packing with their headlamps and making a ridiculous amount of noise! We packed up and then had our yogurt, fruit, and cereal bars in our kitchen and were on the Camino at 8:00. The sunrise was not as good as the day before and it was so cold that we wore our hats, gloves and coats (about 45 degrees). We had quite a climb out of Atapuerca and it was extremely foggy and rocky. When we ... read more

Geo: 42.3129, -4.04481The church bells were an hour off; Dave got up on seven bell chimes and turned on the dorm light! After one dirty look, the light went right off -- it was only 6:00! We got up at 7:00 and it was only us and a couple from Nuremberg left. They were very interesting and unique pilgrims. They were doing a Camino from Nuremberg to Santiago, over 2500 kilometers, in five sections. They would end this year in Burgos, and complete the last section from Burgos to Santiago next year.We were on the Camino by 7:30. The early morning dawn light was great, but with temps hovering around 50 -- should have worn our gloves and warm hats.We passed through the village of Villabistia, legend has it that if you dip your head in the ... read more

Geo: 42.3413, -3.70291The two women in the beds next to us were noisy. One of their phones rang in the middle of the night and then they started packing at around 6:00. We were hopeful that they would exit quickly and we could go back to sleep until we saw them folding their underwear! There was no hope for sleep so we got up and went to the dining room where we had yogurt and a peach. We were in the street by 7:30 (also in the dark) and had put on our raincoats and rain covers for our packs because it was drizzling. We started out with Matthew and Layla and ended up taking a wrong turn because we saw a lot of pilgrims on a path. They suddenly stopped and turned around and we ... read more
