I am sure more obscure provinces of Thailand can be even cheaper, but Bangkok is great value for western tourists. Your money seems to go really far, and what you get for them is generally good quality. Add to that the friendliness of the people and the obvious charm of the city, and you have a winner. At least for me. After coming back to Bangkok from the resort in Rayong, I spent Saturday express-sightseeing and shopping. I got tricked, I got lost and I got tired, but still I enjoyed every second. I drove a Tuk-Tuk, the three-wheeled motor-cycles roaming the streets of Bangkok, and the drivers were all keen to talk and show me things. I didn’t really trust them that much, but they seem friendly enough. They always try to make deals ... read more

Saturday saw us leaving Bangkok, and heading south for 3 hours by car, to the city of Rayong, and the Novotel Rim Rae Resort. We got to see some Thai countryside, with Pineapple farms and forests of rubber-trees. Other than that, it was mostly ugly highway. I even fell asleep in the car after another sleepless night (!) Arriving at the resort tired after over 3 hours in a car, disappointment lay ahead as we quickly realized the resort was in the middle of nowhere, with not so much as a mini-market in sight. The standard of the hotel was several levels below the one in Bangkok, and to my despair, the lobby (and I also later discovered, the whole hotel) was full of white, fat, pale northern Europeans. In other words, all the guests looked ... read more

My flight went very well, everything being on time, Oslo to Stockholm with SAS, and after a 4 hour wait, Thai Airlines from Stockholm to Bangkok. Now I have heard a lot of good things about Thai, and I had quite high expectations for them. I was a little bit disappointed with the plane, there were no personal TV-screens, the in-flight movies were quite uninteresting and the plane was rather old. Also they ran out of chicken for dinner, so I had to eat salmon, but that was actually rather tasty. The flight crew was polite, but not the constantly smiling, stunningly beautiful girls I had expected (or rather hoped for;). Arriving at Bangkok Airport, I chatted a little bit with Tord Stølmacher, an old friend of my brother. He was on his way for a ... read more

December 14th 2004

I havent written in here for about a month now, so at the request of some you, I have made a summary of my time here in Mexico. I left Ecuador on November 20th, saying goodbye to Brenda, which wasnt the happiest thing to do so far. But we had a wonderful time together, so it was ok. I flew with Copa Airlines from Quito to Panama City. On that flight I had gayest flight attendant I have ever had. There is a gay flight attendant on almost every flight, but this one was so feminine, he made the Great Garlic Girls look straight! Aiaiai. Arriving in Panama, I wanted to get out of the airport, as I had a whopping 11 hours wait before my flight onwards to Mexico. I walked out to immigration, and ... read more

Wednesday 10th of November, Lima-Guayaquil-Salinas Our plane left at 10.55, so we went to Lima airport for the third and final time this trip. As usual, Anders likes to arrive early, so we had time for breakfast and stuff at the airport. We were flying Taca again, for the third time. And once again, they had a nice plane, with nice crew. The flight was 1h30mins so it went nice and quick and we landed in Ecuador before schedule. The airport in Guayaquil was a little bit slower than we have gotten used to on this trip, and we had to stand in line for a while to get through immigration. But we had no problems getting through, and well outside the airport, we hired a taxi to drive us the 3 kilometers to the bus ... read more

Sunday 7th of November, Lima Today we had a very relaxing day, thorougly deserved after 10 days of intensive touring of Peru. We walked around the area and found a very nice oceanfront mall where we had lunch. Below the mall was a nice beach, and the pacific ocean stretched out as far as the eye could see. After discovering several small, itchy red marks on our arms, and one too many cockroach on the floor, we decided to move rooms. We ended up on the 4th floor, away from those damn cockroaches. What else did we do? Not much, which was nice. Monday 8th of November, Lima We started of by having breakfast at a local cafe, before starting our long walk towards the city centre. Our mission for the day was to get the ... read more

Thursday 4th of November, Lima - Iquitos Brenda was not happy with everything on our tours so far. She told Victor, and as a compensation, he offered to pay for a taxi downtown, so we could look around Lima. We had some hours to spare before our flight to Iquitos, so we accepted his offer. So far we had only seen the area around the airport in Lima, which is truly terrible. Downtown is nicer, with some restored colonial buildings, and some nice shopping areas. We watched the changing of the guards in front of the government building, and looked around the central downtown area. After that, Victor drove us to the airport, where we caught our flight to Iquitos. Iquitos is Perus biggest jungle city, with 500 000 inhabitants. There are no roads leading here, ... read more

Sunday 31st of October, Cusco - Puno We got picked up at our hotel again, not feeling very sad to leave this so called 3 star hotel behind. This time we were dropped off at a bus-station, and told to get on the Inka Express, direction Puno. The duration of the trip was 9 hours, and we were going to stop along several ruins and tourist places along the way. The guide working on the bus was rather uninteresting, so the stops we made were not really much to keep my interest. The ancient temple of Wiracocha being the nicest of the sites. We also went up to 4300 meters, so a new record for me! We had a nice self-serve lunch half way through the trip, and got chatting with and old couple from Australia. ... read more

Thursday 28th of October, Cusco We had to get up quite early today, because we were being picked up at 7.30 to go on a tour of the Sacred Valley (Den hellige dal). We started by visiting a busy market in the city of Pisaq, but sadly enough, the traditional market where they sell food and handicrafts to locals, was almost drowned by the booths offering typical tourist merchandise. Next up were some small ruins and then lunch, which was a nice self-service thing. After that, the days high-point, a visit to the old Inka city of Ollantaytambo. Still very much a busy city, it has some amazing ruins from the Inka time. The guide told us that the whole area was a astronomical observation are, and all the walls and buildings served a purpose in ... read more

Monday 25th of October, Lima The plane left Santiago on time 7.45 heading for Lima. We flew with a nice airline called Taca, which is a group of Central and South American airlines. The plane was new and spacious, and the 3 hour flight went quick and easy. Supertired as I was, I fell asleep on the plane, which offcourse shortened the journey lots. Arriving in Lima early in the morning, we quickly realised that the airport here was of a far lower standard than the others we had visited so far. But we made it through immigration and customs, and I withdrew some money. I had absolutely no idea what the Peruvian Sol was worth, but I withdrew 1000 of them. We asked the taxi driver, and he told me it that 1 dollar was ... read more
