Her apartment is very nice, pretty big, and has a great view of the city. We chatted with Kate Lynn for a bit about plans for our stay and sites we needed to see before heading to bed. The next morning, Allison, Kate, and I hopped on the subway and headed downtown. What we encountered there was both entertaining and a bit shocking, as we found ourselves right in the middle of the Pride Festival! The Pride Festival is a giant gathering of gays, lesbians, and transsexuals to show themselves off and celebrate their sexuality. The streets were closed off for the millions of people in attendance, the street vendors, kiosks, a big ... read more

Our trip to LA started off on the wrong foot…first we were stuck in the miserable traffic LA is known for, and secondly, the RoadFood guide disappointed us for the first time, sending us to an overpriced restaurant that had great décor but so-so food. Brian literally paid $18 for a cold ham sandwich….miserable. At least as we were driving to dinner we got a glimpse of a movie premiere! We have no idea if it was something big or not but we saw a red carpet, a crowd, limos, and lots of cameras flashing. It was pretty cool and I’m sorry I didn’t get any pictures, but we were tired! Anyway, the motel we stayed in was located right in Hollywood so we had a pretty good location for the things we wanted to ... read more

With Vegas (and its heartbreak) behind us, we headed over to California to check out the west coast. We drove through some severe traffic (like really, really bad) and finally arrived in San Diego. Tired from our energizing time in Vegas and long trip, we chilled at the hotel. We ordered pizza, caught up on the new episode of Entourage, and hit the sack. We woke early the next morning, ate breakfast at a little place called the Hob Knob Hill, and made our way over to the beach. San Diego is a beautiful, laidback city that has a great feel to it. There are many different beaches to choose from and we ended up at Pacific Beach. It was good weather, sunny and warm, and we hung out on the beach for a couple ... read more

After finishing up at the Grand Canyon the race to Las Vegas was on, as we had tickets to see the show “O,” the water themed Cirque du Solei show. On the way to Vegas, we passed the Hoover Dam, which is pretty big. We stopped to take a couple of pictures and continued on. For our stay in Vegas, we were lucky enough to stay in a nice, gated-community home owned by Allison’s friend Brittany (a fellow Theta...yay!!). The house was sick, with a pool, hottub, outdoor fireplace, plasma TVs in every room, and just an all-around awesome place. We sat shocked for minute, at both how great the place was and how lucky we were to stay there, but then quickly got showered and ready for the show. Looking our best, we went ... read more

You wouldn’t believe how crowded breakfast was! It seemed as if the whole hotel decided to wake up at the butt crack of dawn to eat! (Excuse my French!) Anyway, we were on the road and on the way to the Grand Canyon by 8 am. Needless to say, I drove the two hours to the Canyon while Brian slept like a baby next to me in the passenger seat. Let me just say that you know you’re in the middle of nowhere when you push seek on the radio and it goes through every single station over and over again! We had decided that our first stop for the Grand ... read more

The drive to Flagstaff, AZ was relatively uneventful until signs for Meteor Crater caught my eye! Despite the fact that the crater was only 6 miles off the highway, it looked as if we were driving towards absolutely nothing for awhile and when we arrived, we were shocked by the number of tourists there! I mean…this crater is literally in the middle of nowhere! It was a little bizarre. Unfortunately our story ends here because we decided it wasn’t worth paying $15 each to see a huge hole in the ground! (That’s what we’re going to the Grand Canyon for right?!) However, we do know some fun facts about what we missed out on: 1) Meteor Crater is a saucer-shaped hole 4000 ft in diameter and 600 ft deep and 2) the destructive energy of ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Santa Fe June 21st 2007

Santa Fe is known as “The City Different” and when your eyes fall upon the adobe houses and Spanish courtyards that makeup the city, it’s easy to understand why. Brian and I were pleased to find that our Bed & Breakfast had us staying in a truly Santa Fe style house; an adobe building with chili peppers hanging on the front door for decoration, a kiva fireplace in the room, and southwestern accents throughout the room. After getting settled in we decided to find the main Plaza and get a bite to eat. The Plaza is a square in the center of Santa Fe closed down to cars and lined with southwestern shops, restaurants, and street vendors (mostly Native Americans selling jewelry). While it’s a nice area, (certainly worth visiting) it seems a bit like ... read more

The drive to Lubbock, Texas proved to be more eventful than we had anticipated. It started out fine, as we drove along long roads that seemed to go on forever. Seriously, there is nothing for miles and miles, and the land is so flat. You can look out in every direction and see the land meet the sky. It really feels like you can look out onto the horizon forever. We stopped at a small burger joint in Amarillo, Texas. The place was filled mostly with locals, but we were pleased with the good food at a low price. We then got back on the road with only a short two hours left on the drive. Only an hour outside of Lubbock, and with Allison at the wheel, we heard another “gug-gug-gug” coming from the rear ... read more

The ride from Memphis to Oklahoma City was a tense one. Brian and I were extremely bored and kind of at each other whenever we’d try to converse so he spent much of the ride watching episodes of House (thanks Jess!) on my laptop when I was driving and when he was driving I started getting reacquainted with the book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (the movie version’s coming out soon!!!). By the time we got to Oklahoma City we’d been in the car for almost 7 hours but we were slightly cheered up by the fact that, courtesy of my dad and his hotel points, we’d be staying in our first hotel of the trip…the Sheraton. After checking in and relaxing in the room for a bit, we decided to check ... read more

We arrived at the Smythe’s beautiful house, family friends of the LaGasse’s, in the evening and were ready to eat. After Mrs. Smythe suggested a few places around the city we could try, we headed out towards downtown Memphis. We made our way over to Beale Street, the most happening part of the city. Beale St. is shut off from all traffic, leaving people free to just walk down the street at their leisure. We were lucky enough to make it to Beale St. on a Saturday night, a party night of course, and the experience was just fantastic. For dinner, we made our way over to the Blues City Café, as the Smythe's ... read more
