Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8/12-8/14 We got on the bus early in the morning, and headed to Wiener Neustadt, a small town along the way to the alps. I fell asleep on the bus, so I missed the opportunity to stare out the window on the way there. We arrived in the town and were given about 45 minutes until we had to meet for a tour. Having not had breakfast, I was hungry. Shayna and I went off to a cafe to get coffee and something to eat. I have somehow figured out that 'mohn' means squished-up poppyseeds (I haven't [View Full Entry]

Monday, 8/11 The German word of the day is: kurz (short). Last night I had a hard time falling asleep due to my persistent sore throat. It's frustrating that they don't have easy access to medication here the way we do in the US. I resolved to buy some honey to add to my tea to help my throat a little. We headed off to class around 9:30, and we began our class with discussing logistics of our trip to the Alps. I will not be bringing my laptop and will not have internet access, so I won't be able to [View Full Entry]

Sunday, 8/10 I slept in to try and get over my sore throat. Our original plan was to visit Baden, a town south of Vienna with thermal baths. Since many businesses are closed Sunday and websites often in German only, it was difficult to figure out when and if the Baden baths were actually open. However, there was another location, Oberlaa, that was open Sunday (and much closer than Baden) so we decided to go there instead. The baths weren't exactly what I had expected, less of a "hot springs" idea and more of a health club with multiple pools. There [View Full Entry]

Saturday, 8/09 I woke up early this morning to get ready for my first real weekend in Vienna! Tiffany and I had planned to go biking along the Danube this weekend, but we also wanted to stop at the monastery at Klosterneuberg (mostly because it apparently has great wine!) Trying to coordinate a meeting time at the monastery with some other classmates who didn't want to bike there, and the rainy forecast for the day lead Tiffany and I to decide that biking was too complicated for our plan. We all settled on meeting at 10am, getting breakfast, stopping by the [View Full Entry]

Friday, 8/08 Friday morning we watched another movie in class and discussed the Thirty Years' War as well as other miscellaneous topics. We watched another movie, but I felt like it was poorly done, as I was confused about what was going on despite being awake the entire time. After class, we got Kasekrainer (cheese sausage) for lunch. One of the girls I was out with, Melissa, can't eat pork. She pointed out that it's hard to avoid pork in a country where their national dish is sausage! We headed towards the Imperial Treasury, but stopped at a cafe so Melissa [View Full Entry]

Thursday, 8/07 Today we had our excursion to the Melk Abbey in the Austrian countryside. We had to get up early to make it to the train station in time to catch the train at 9:45am. I was making my breakfast, and I really wanted some toast. They have REALLY good jam here, and I want to eat it all the time now. I had one slice of bread left, and it was moldy, so I had to eat some of my other stuff. When I panic-shopped the first day, I don't think I thought to check the dates of the [View Full Entry]

Once again I am behind on my posts, so I'll give you two for one :) Tuesday, 8/05 I woke up determined to figure out how to brew myself a good cup of coffee without any measuring instruments. I think I am getting the hang of it, but it's funny how few automatic functions my coffeemaker has. It won't stop the drip if I remove the pot, and it doesn't shut off. But typical of everything else on this trip, I'm getting the hang of it. We arrived to class and began to discuss the Reformation. Though I've learned about it [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! I know I'm a day behind in my blogs, so I'll fill you in on both days... Sunday, 8/03 I woke up late (after being out until almost 5am) and my roommate Kelsey and I decided to visit the Military Musuem. We hopped on a streetcar and hoped for the best that it would deliver us to the right location. After some confusion, we got off on a semi-random stop and walked to the Belvedere. One of the things helpful to navigate this city is jumping from landmark to landmark. Once you've made it to a landmark, you can [View Full Entry]

Saturday, 8/02 The German word of the day is: verdienen (to earn). Today I decided that it was a brilliant move on my part to bring some Febreeze with me to Vienna. The weather here, aside from being all over the board from sun to rain, is crazy humid. Without explaining the details of walking around all day in high humidity (which I have never truly experienced before), I'm grateful for having some sort of method of fabric refreshing. On that note, allegedly this dorm doesn't have any clothes dryers. Okay, but they also don't allow you to dry your clothes [View Full Entry]
