At around 7.45am, Mark and I headed down to the lobby and met the 5 new members of our Tour. Todd had told the rest of the ‘carry-overs’ not to meet up until 8am and to not interrupt him as he did his introduction with the newbies. When Todd finished, Mark and I started introducing ourselves to Steve, Zack, Annabel, Joanna and Kristina, but not before breaking a strap pin of my watch when trying to put my very heavy rucksack down again. Who needs a watch anyway when you are on a trip like this? I kept saying that I didn’t really want to keep a track of time when on the Tour, so now I couldn’t! Eventually the rest of the group (and G and Graham) showed up and we quickly headed outside to ... read more

I found out that Mark had to go to the front desk for help getting back in when I did try and return. After waking up and whilst getting ready, I tried to call Kylie and Scott’s room for breakfast plans with Zoe, but got no answer. Down in the lobby I met up with Tanya, G, Graham, Neal, Kylie and Scott and our ride for the day, Julia, as Todd had to go into the office. Julia was a fellow Trek leader who Todd had managed to persuade to act as chauffeur for the day whilst he isn’t around. Everyone apart from Graham and Neal was heading to Universal Studios for the day, whilst they had persuaded Julia to help them track down the actual hospital used when filming Scrubs. After Julia was able to ... read more

It was the last day of the Transcontinental South trip so Kylie, Zoe and I rode in the front row together one last time. After having breakfast at a Waffle House, where we spoilt ourselves on the last of the food kitty, we soon reached Los Angeles, where Todd took us on a quick tour of Beverly Hills, Sunset Boulevard and Bel Air, where we were asked if we knew the famous TV show set here. Everyone replied ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, and then someone asked how the theme song went. Then nearly all of us started reciting the lyrics almost perfectly - “Now this is a story, all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. And I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, I’ll tell you how I ... read more

Zoe, Kylie, Scott and I headed to San Diego Zoo and enjoyed a pretty good day out. After taking our time at first strolling along, we rushed to see everything we wanted, deciding to get on a tour bus around the zoo to help us decide what we wanted to come back and see. The sea lion show we saw was pretty awesome, seeing the aforementioned animal entertaining the crowd with ease. Damn they are good sliders! Seeing the polar bears, elephants and giraffes was pretty cool, and I end up buying a souvenir for Lewis in the gift shop. In the end I have to guess what size to get for him. When we met up with the others, Todd dropped us off in downtown San Diego for us to walk around and find our ... read more

Maybe there are planning something?

Due to my early night, I was awake at 6am, and showered, dressed and ready to leave at 6.30am, so I just waited around til 8.30am when I took my stuff to the van for loading up. Turns out that Zoe had called and knocked the previous night as well as sending me a couple of messages. She, Kylie and Scott had dinner across the road at the Hard Rock hotel and they wanted to see if I was interested in joining them. Today they just kept claiming that I was ignoring them and I tried to explain but to no avail. The day's destination was San Diego, and if you're like me everytime you say the name, you say it in the style of Ron Burgendy from Anchorman (my brother and his friends frequently quote ... read more

After another lay in, I awoke when the guys knocked at our door to see if I was joining them to watch the World Cup semi-final between Holland and Uruguay. As I just woke up, I said I would meet up with them and asked which casino they were heading for – ESPN Zone at New York, New York. I then got up, showered, and changed, making sure I put on something orange to support Mark and his fellow countrymen. The only orange thing I had with me was one of my many Bubba Gump tees. Once I put that on and had everything I needed, I made the short, but still long because of my flip-flops, trip to the casino. When I finally arrived at New York, New York, and found a safe place to ... read more

As it was a free day, I had a lay in, waking around 9ish, before joining Zoe, Kylie and Scott for breakfast at the resort dining room. And guess what? It was another all-you-can-eat buffet, making our last 3 meals all buffets. Now is that eating or what? We then headed out to walk up to the Strip and walk the breakfast off. It was about a 15 minute walk up to the Strip, and in the weather – absolutely boiling hot with no cloud cover – it was a struggle to keep going. Eventually we headed indoors into the Miracle Mile shopping mall of Planet Hollywood. The instant feel of cold, cold air conditioning on our skins was such a relief, we decided to take our time there. In the end, I bought some new ... read more

It was yet another early start for us, as we headed 50 yards up to road into Zion National Park. There was a wide selection of hiking available, and whilst everyone apart from Zoe, Kylie and Scott went to Angels Landing, I decided to go off on my own hike to Watchman’s Trail. I didn’t fancy attempting Angels Landing, especially with the precarious footing and chains near the top. Once the Park bus dropped me off at the start of my walk, I had a quick look around at the surrounding rocks and cliffs. There was a small stream running nearby and the sound of its flowing water and the birds made for a pleasant start to the morning. As I set off on the walk, I quickly discovered I had the wrong stop and was ... read more

Despite the fact that we were leaving the ranch at 10am, I woke up at 6.30am. No one else from our group was up, so I headed for a shower. On my return Todd walked past and seemed OK. At that moment I wasn't sure if I was fine now or still a little pissed. A little later on and it was now 8am and only Sumi was awake as well. Mark was almost up, but not sure on anyone else, and I really didn’t care at that moment. As I was already packed and ready to go, I sat on the couch I slept on last night and covered my eyes with my cowboy hat. I did acknowledge those who said morning to me, or even apologised for last night, but that was it. I ... read more

I was up at 5.55am and by 6.45am I had already showered, dressed, packed and had taken my tent down. After everyone else finally woke and had breakfast, I decided to give work a call, and ended up speaking to Karl before talking to Andi. She admitted that she was wanted to speak to me, especially as she wasn’t there the last time I called. I told her about all the incidents and injuries I’ve picked up, to which she responded that everyone at work felt that would happen to me! We talked for a good 10 or 15 minutes as I looked on at the others packing and loading up, before we finally ended the call. It was great to speak to Andi, and it seemed to have lifted me up more. Anyway, once we ... read more
