On the road yesterday - longest day yet - 582 miles - sore butts!! We came through Sturgis, SD in the morning, site of the big motorcycle rally each August - I added to my bandana napkin collection with some really strange examples! I'm now the proud owner of a Sturgis 2009 motorcycle rally pin - bet none of you can say that! And speaking of motorcycles, we've been seeing thousands of them on the road, particularly in South Dakota. It does make you wonder, the number of riders who ride without helmets - if they don't have brain damage before, they will after. My favorite was the bleach blond wearing a leather vest with a slogan on the back that said "If you can read this, the bitch just passed you." Coal and oil wells ... read more

On the road early the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 1, leaving Oacoma, SD. Actually did a short backwards run on I-90 to the rest stop the other side of Chamberlain for a great exhibit on Lewis and Clark. South Dakota has done a great job with their rest stops - friendly people to help you find directions, clean restrooms, interesting exhibits. One of the things Steve and I realized is that we've forgotten as much US history as we remember. Barely could remember much about Lewis and Clark - one of my favorite factoids is that they sent a prarie dog back to Jefferson in the White House. Another day of setting the cruise control at 75 and trying to stay awake. South Dakota is one humongous state! Lots of fields of sunflowers, with their rude, ... read more

A real road trip day - straight across I-90 from Wisconsin to Minnesota to South Dakota. I now know why they call them the Great Plains... All you have to do is set the cruise control to 75 and make sure you don't fall asleep. The bugs are terrorist sized and splat all over the windshield - it's almost an hourly chore to wipe it clean so you can see out. Lots more corn, interspersed with cows. Lunch at a rest stop, accompanied by an 18 wheeler that should be reported to PETA - must have had thousands of chickens stuffed in tiny cages...guess I'll look for free range chicken from now on. The highlight of the day was the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD - it is created every year from more than 3,000 bushels ... read more

We all know Herbert Hoover as the president who really messed up the recession and ended up with the Depression...but frankly, I didn't know a lot more about him. Did you know that at one time he was the highest paid person in the world - making $30,000 a year as a mining engineer with a truly golden touch - that was big money back at the turn of the century. Maybe one of the most impressive things about him was the woman he was married to - the first woman to graduate from Stanford with a geology degree. His work to feed the hungry and starving of Europe after both world wars was also news, as was his work with Truman to reorganize the government. Ok, so he screwed up with the recession...but seems to ... read more

A quick jaunt down to Springfield, IL to the Lincoln Library and Museum, which is quite a production. 2009 is the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth and the museum has been spruced up to celebrate. They have done a wonderful job, using the newest technologies, to truly bring to life this monumental man. My guess is that Disney and Lucasfilm had a hand in some of the exhibits and productions. There was a wonderful short film about the library that used 3D holograms fabulously - I was sure the fellow was real in the beginning. In some ways this museum, while very well done, didn't seem to be as fascinating...perhaps because we felt we already knew so much about him. We then took a wonderful tour of Lincoln's home in Springfield, the only home he every owned. ... read more

Do you remember what happenned on Friday, August 9, 1974? It is the one reference question I could always answer without looking it up. Of course, the question is which was the more important event - Richard Nixon's resignation or our wedding? It really was deja vue all over again at the Ford Presidential Library and Museum in Grand Rapids, MI when we saw all the tv coverage from August 9 - it was like reliving our wedding day - watching the news, hoping that Nixon would get out of DC and Ford would finish his speeches in time for us to get married! The Ford Library showcases Gerald Ford very nicely and you are left with the impression of him as a very decent human being...and at that time that's probably exactly what this country ... read more

On the road again! It was hard to leave the lake after such a wonderful summer but road trip fun lies ahead. Lauren joined us on our first leg from Fayette, Me to North Chatham, NY on Tuesday, August 25 to stay with my college sorority sister Jan Langlois and her husband George Vollmuth - two wonderful friends that have been Lauren's east coast parents for many years. Of course Lauren had to get used to her parents road trip behaviors - she may never be the same again. It was great to see Jan and George, enjoy a wonderful dinner with them and laugh as always. Wednesday morning as we left there were some tears shed by all three of us as we said goodbye for the year with Lauren off to Salzburg on Saturday ... read more

Ah - Summer 2009 in Maine - the Summer of Wonder! It’s hard to believe that 2 ½ months went by so quickly and that we’re about to get back on the road again. We had such wonderful times with visits from friends, visits to friends, lazy days by the lake and the fireplace…depending on the weather. It was a summer of making memories: *Being together as a family for the whole time was the best part of the summer - we laughed, we teased, we loved each other, we read, we swam and canoed, we went to silly movies, and we just treasured this time together. It was the longest period of time we had all spent together in about 10 years since Lauren went away to Hotchkiss…and of course, we all wondered if we ... read more

We arrived in Maine a week ago and it feels like heaven… Our last three days on the road included stops at Steve’s parents outside Baltimore, where I got to enjoy the short season of soft shell crabs - nothing better! On to Lauren’s in Farmington, CT the next day, with a side trip to the town in which I grew up - River Edge, NJ. Never a truer phrase - You can never go home again - the modest little home I grew up in has been torn down and replaced by a McMansion. It looked so out of place on Concord Drive with all the older homes…but I guess someone loves it. We did all the obligatory stops - St. Peter the Apostle Elementary School, River Dell Junior and Senior high schools, the local ... read more

Monday, June 8 On the road again...and happy birthday, Steve! Tennessee is one long state east to west and I began to wonder if we'd ever get out of it. As we passed exit signs on the freeway to many small cities throughout Tennessee, Steve began to reminisce about his travel in the early 1970's when he worked for Seligman & Latz in New York. His job at S & L was to visit the various beauty salons the company ran in department stores throughout the country and he, being the low man on the totem pole, got some very interesting routes to travel throughout the south - Rome, Georgia where he got to go waterskiing in a bayou with alligators and Ashland, Kentucky and the $7 a night motel room. He dredged up names out ... read more
