I feel as though I'm on that trip!
Good grief, your travelogue is so vivid I could swear I need to stop typing and clean bugs off my computer screen and can smell the truck full of pigs! At first I was discouraged when my Inbox noted 18 e-mails in it at 7 a.m. today, but then I found 7 were from your blog. No wonder you had to cancel one visit -- a girl has to have her blog time each day, doesn't she? Sounds like a fab start to you trip -- truckers and pigs and corn as high as an elephant's eye, followed by fried chicken. As for the nostalgic return to your wedding day -- did Steve take directions on that occasion as well as he apparently did crossing into Canada?? Be safe returning to the "left" side of the country. We need you out here!

Dear Anne Marie: We both read your first blog and loved it. It was so well done and gave us more than a glimpse of what your summer was like.About as close to perfect as you can get. I may never make it but the blogs will help a lot. A.M I've been telling you for years that you should write a book. You have the talent so get off you butt and use it. It was great. Much love. Louis

Thinking of You
Anne Marie, I've been thinking about you the last week or so and figuring that it was about time to be hearing from you again. Am glad for that. You've been missed out here. Your summer truly does sound fantastic and very different from any one you could have out this way. Not that there aren't really nice summers out here, but they certainly are different from the joys you described. I look forward to your descriptions on the way back out here and hope to have coffee - and maybe a Bichon walk - shortly after you return. All is "well enough" out here, even with the usual political and fiscal crazies. Liz

Thanks
Anne Marie, it has been great sharing your experiences and preceptions along the way. Thanks for taking the time to bring us all along. I look forward to seeing you in the fall and KNOW you will enjoy the summer. Liz

I'm speechless
How awe-inspiring. It almost makes me cry to read of your archival discovery. So Kansas turned out to be far more than wheatfields and vegetable renderings. (Was there an 18-minute gap in the scratchy tape?) WHEAT THING (Eyes rolling, stage let)??? Anne Marie, NOW don't you wish you believed in censorship?

God IS working overtime !
or howelse could I have been able to read about your trip and push the right buttons on this computer just to hear Anne Marie's description of Bryce etc. Love from Big Daddy.

MIdwest veggies
You didn't know that the basic vegetable recipe (they still say "eat your vegetables," not "eat your veggies" in Kansas)? You just put 'em in a pot, cover with water, and boil the piss out of them! Then add butter. I learned this as a toddler in Bellingham, WA, which is actually 10 miles west of Des Moines, Iowa. You describe an appreciation that is a major part of why I have taken a dozen vacations in the past just to fly to some segment of the Midwest and South to tour around a few states at a time. It's good to be in touch -- personally and professionally. Hope you took time after dinner in a wheatfield to take out the clubs and hit 100 balls or so. You had the required space.

Middle America
AMG, I really appreciate your insights. I've never been to middle America - never even gave it much thought. However, your descriptions remind me that I should give it thought and tht we're all so much a part of so much that we don't really know about. Again, thanks for taking us all along. Liz

The journey is more divine by the day!
Your journey and experiences sound more divine (and enviable) by the day. Glad you hit one of the narrow-gauge railroads, and the hike sounds like it may have been enough to wrestle to the ground the points involved in the Mexican dinner with margaritas, carrot cake and lattes. I'll wait to be surprised by which establishment got your business: the 2 tees for $10, or Gucci next door.

Did Vegas swallow you??
What happened, did you lose your computer in Vegas at a craps table and stop blogging??

Zion
I have been to Zion twice and I agree that it is incredibly beautiful. I did a lot of hiking there, even in July when it was 95 degrees, but the air is so dry it didn't affect me a bit. Of course, I was a youthful 53 at the time; today at 59+ it might be a different story. See you next week.

Yeah, yeah, I get it. Vegas shows, America's diversity, God at his best in Zion, (I've decided God was indeed, a man. Would a woman do this stuff to us?), bathtubs and mirrors to make poor Lauren cringe ... never mind all that. How are your golf clubs? Your blog site is splendid and looks like something you spend a couple of hours a day writing, laying out, selecting photos, and editing. I am impressed, Ms. Editor. How did I not know about this?? Now, of course, I've got to find it daily so I don't miss any further captivating chapters recounting how we hung out the laundry in the 50's. (Yes, you do bring back amusing memories.) Your imagery of crossing Monitor Pass was so vivid and brought back the years I spent in that area when I had a stake in Alpine County. Did you drive past my old motel at Woodford's? Meanwhile, you are already missed on this end of your journey. Just don't think I'm not counting how many wines and cheeses on balconies you enter in this journal...and chocolate strawberries with champagne in the mirrored bathtub (Lauren, that was just to gross you out). Be safe. Hold your political nose through AZ and TExas. Marty

Memories
Boy, your descriptions bring back lots of memories of road trips that my 5-6 person family used to take over Easter vacations - all into the southwest and many to Death Valley. I'd forgotten the places you describe, but you brought them back to life for me. Thanks for the reminders. Great descriptions. I'm really enjoying this. Liz By the way "5-6 person family" depends on whether my oldest brother was with us or off to the army, UCD, etc.

TMI
Mom, have I taught you nothing about TMI "two person bathtub and mirrored bed" geeez! Kidding-this is a great blog, and I am glad to hear that you are having a great time. Sign me up for the weekend beruit tournament!

Ready!
Anne Marie, I hope that the picture reflects pretty much all that is going with you in the car; or are you taking a small pickup?? Have fun; I'm sure you will. I look forward to more "dog walks" when you and Steve return, maybe a nice meal or two at Scotts on the River. Liz
