So after a few days in Kuala Lumpur we (meaning I) got a bit claustrophobic, what with the heat and smells and the amount of people. We decided to head up the coast to Georgetown, but at the last minute we changed our minds and decided to visit Pulau Pangkor which is a little island a bit further down. The journey was surprisingly easy once we had navigated the organised chaos that is the KL bus terminal. Andy managed to get us tickets while I bravely had a sit down guarding the bags. After he got back I managed to do our first bit or bartering when buying some oranges, I managed to get a whole Ringot off (about 18p).
The journey was pretty good thanks to a super plush coach. It only took 4 hours to get to the coastal town of Lumut where we wandered around until we found the ferry over to Pangkor. We got into one of the baby pink and yellow taxi-van things and bombed it round to the other side of the island to all the cheaper backpacker accommodation. We found a really nice one for only 40 Rm a night (about 7.20 quid). This was one of the more top end ones as it had a shower and loo, unlike the a-frame ones which are pretty much two bits of corrugated iron and a mattress.
That day we didnt really do much as we got there so late. We had a sleep and then went for something to eat. It was probably our first proper meal since arriving as it was the first time we had been awake and hungry at a reasonable time. I had mixed veg and andy had a reaaaly spicy chicken thing that tasted of fish. Very odd. Oh yeh and alot of tiger beer.
The next day we managed to get up at an alright time so wandered down to the front. We had breakfast (toast and egg) and then went to the beach. We walked along the coast to the Coral beach which was amazing. There are these huge hills that are covered in jungle that reach all the way to the beach. The water was warm but it took me a while to go in. I had to wait until Andy had not been eaten by a jellyfish first. I really hate
jellyfish. On the beach there were these really big white crabs that had burrows across the beach. They ran off at high speed when ever you got near them though.
After the beach we went back to our hut and not surprisingly fell asleep again. We were woken up by a loud thud on the roof. When we looked out there was a monkey sitting outside our door eating my orange. After scaring that one off we went outside to try and take a picture but at that point about a million more came out of the jungle (okay about 3 but one was massive). So we ran back inside and watched them eat our lunch. Buggers.
That night we walked to the front to find something for tea. We found one just on the front and ordered some food. Andy decided to order the fish and was swiftly marched away by the woman to a pile of fish and asked to pick which one. He came back looking a bit confused telling me he had picked one that was about the size of a small whale. It all turned out alright though as when it came we
both really liked it so it didnt last long.
