Well we've spent the last three weeks in Vietnam, it's got good bread,
secret tunnels, deserted beaches, too many motobikes and lot and lots of
fish.
We meet up with dean in the new capitol Hanoi, and with a population of 8
million with 4 milliion motobikes, we started to learn how to cross the
road. it's amazing they don't crash in to each other, well not til it rains
anyway. We saw a record of 5 people on one, matresess, bicycles and even 3
pigs! We also went to see the traditional water puppetry, was a bit silly
and we didn't understand anything but it was quite entertaining.
Then we headed around Halong bay for 3 days, spending a night on a Junk boat
and one on Cat Ba island. The bay is beautiful with thousands of little
islands jutting out of the sea.
Then we jumped on a train to Ninh Binh, which doesn't see many foreigners so
we were the main atraction in town. every one would shout hello and the kid
shake your hand and run giggling. we even got invited in to a funeral, but
we didn't realise at the time. there was a guy all done up praying and
dancing in front of the alter, and would go in to a trance now and again,
everyone else was sitting around him watching with a band playing too. he
had a little shot and started smoking 3 cigarettes at once, while throwing
money around to people and give out gifts of food. it was quite an
experience and we came away with a goody bag and about 50p in small notes.
We tried goat at one of the restaurants, which came out have boiled and we
had to cook it on a hot plate. it was really tasty. we also tryed some
lethal rice (bout 55%) from a bottle with a whole lizard in it.
We coached it down to Hue on our 100th day on the travels. here we visited
the Demilitarised Zone, where the coutry was split between communist and non
comunist and went down some of the reble's tunnel network.
Then we travelled further south to Hoi An, a small town full of taylors and
really good shakes, like avacado, mmmmm. and close to MySon and ancient
temple complex bomb to bits by the americans.
We followed the coast round to Nha Trang, a real party town, so out we went
for Vokda and redbulls for 33p and ended up at the sailing club for a boogie
and wents skinning dipping in the sea, we thought we were going to get
arrested when the security picked up our clothes, but they just wanted to
tel us to do it further down the beach.
Then next day was on the party boat around the islands. "up your bum, don't
tell your mum" the skipper would shout as we all took a drink. they even had
a make shift band and a sing song, Aaron had to get up and join in with an
irish song, but he didn't even know it. so he just made up some words and
did a little jig.
A lady told us about this place, jungle beach, so we got a car up there and
it was great. a little complex of palm leaf huts on a deserted beach in the
middle of no where. here we relaxed for a bit, played lots of volley ball
and built a sand boat two people could sit in.
Next was Mui Ne. A small strip of resorts along the beach. We went to the
sand dune for sun rise and skidded down on sleds. We also went in a sand
canyon and smelly fishing village, with a mountain of crabs. We even got
invited in to a big group photo of a veitnamese tour group.
Then it was time to head west to HCMC. We wondered round the city and then
all said our goodbyes and Dean flew back to England and I flew to Bangkok to
meet Mum and Dad, while Aaron is travelling through Cambodia.
