Once again we when we woke up it appeared that we had beaten the hangover. We had another lovely breakfast with Mr and Mrs Long before walking to the Reunification Palace. The building is stuck in a time warp. Its been left exactly as it looked in 1975 when the communist tanks crashed through the gates and Saigon surrendered to the North. The story is very interesting but sadly the Palace is not. Its just 70’s decorated room after 70’s decorated room each filled with tables and chairs. We were pleased that it was cheap to get in. We were not pleased that we had to stay longer than necessary because it rained so hard that we couldn’t leave.
After the rain stopped we walked to the War Remnants Museum. It was far more interesting that the palace, but it was very sad. There were many stories and pictures of torture victims and lots of pictures of victims of the defoliants used during the war which caused so many terrible birth defects.
We told the people at O'Brien's that we would be back to celebrate St Patrick’s day, but the previous nights antics had started to catch up with
us and we really didn’t feel like partying. We sat on the balcony of a bar, but I just couldn’t get into the drinking mood. I drank water while Andy and Pete tried a beer. We finally gave up and went home at 8pm. As far as St Patrick’s day was concerned I suppose you could say we peaked too soon!
When we went for breakfast both Mr and Mrs Long were feeling unwell. We said they should go back to bed but they still wanted to sit with us for breakfast. We were moving to a new hotel after breakfast because we were staying in Saigon longer than planned and Mrs Long’s was fully booked. Her sisters hotel was also fully booked so we were booked into a hotel just opposite. We said our goodbyes to Mr and Mrs Long and were sad to be leaving.
It was also our last day with Pete. We had our bus to Can Tho booked for the next day and Pete really wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. We felt it only right that we should say goodbye over a few beers so we picked somewhere local and sat
outside to people watch. Sitting outside also meant that we got harassed by every wandering sales person. Mind you sitting inside offers no real protection from them anyway.
In the evening we did the most British thing we could think of after a day on the beer….. We went for a curry. We were all feeling quite adventurous so each picked something different. For Andy and I its worked out well, but for Pete who’s curry had a strange taste of toothpaste it didn’t work out so well. He managed the meat, but had to leave the sauce behind. The staff very kindly offered to cook him something else but by then he was already full on rice and naan.
