18 Sep 2012 Hochiminh – Con Dao Island After my trip to HCMC next we were heading to Con Dao Island.
Con Dao Island is situated in Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province.
The spectacular Con Dao archipelago of islands is located in the south-east of Vietnam. Con Dao Island is also famous for its nice beaches shaded with evergreen trees, fresh air, clear blue waters, and primitive forests. Looking at a map Con Dao Island looks like a bear rising from the sea to south east of Vietnam. Originally a prison for patriots and revolutionists during the French and American resistance. The Island sheltered brave revolutionary spirits of the Vietnamese people. More than 22,000 prisoners who dedicated their lives to national independence were incarcerated on the isolated island of Con Dao.
Its a 45 min flight from HCMC to Con Dao. The flight was a bit bumpy but we managed to get there safely. We arrived at around 2pm in the afternoon and our driver and Butler from Six Senses Resort were waiting for us.
Six Senses Resort sits along 1.6km beach front and is surrounded by a dramatic mountain landscape. The resort was perfectly
laid out and the staff over there are very welcoming.
Rest of the day i was in the resort and was getting familiar myself with the amazing surroundings and beach.
19th Sep 2012. Con Dao Island (Fishing Trip)
We were picked up by the driver and guide at around 7am and taken to Con Dao Travel Port . After reaching the port we were transferred to the fishing boat and sailed away.
At each fishing boat in Con Dao, there are from 4 to 6 sailors serving for the fishing trip on the sea with baits are the live cuttles which are prepared in advance in the cellar. Depending on fishing position, we were recommended to be getting the bait with small or large cuttle (thin and long cuttle).
We had our lunch with sailors on the fishing boat, they grilled the freshly caught fish together with cuttle marinated in lemon and mustard and before the lunch we had a typical sea fish sour soup.
It was an exciting and challenging day with fishes in Con Dao. At around 4pm we came back to the seaport and were dropped back to our hotel.
20th Sep 2012 Con Dao Island (Snorkeling & Fishing Trip)
After breakfast, we were transferred to Con Dao Seaport. This time it was for Snorkeling and Fishing.
We also toured the Tai Islet - Con Dao. The marine ecosystem of Tai Islet - Con Dao is a rich and colorful picture of the coral with the sea creatures hidden in the sun through the clear blue water. To Tai Islet, tourists will admire the
beauty of sparkling mysterious aquarium with many species of colorful, exotic coral which are hard to see
anywhere else.
We also saw ebony squirrels - the endemic squirrel which is in Con Dao, varans, gecko and many sea birds, the white bird – a rare and valuable kind belonging to dove family, the red face monkey – the rare kind which has been nourishing in the Tai Islet.
Later in the afternoon we started fishing and caught some decent size fishes. Then we were transferred to a small remote island on round basket boat (Thúng chai
in Vietnamese) where we BBQ'd the fish and had our lunch. We returned to our main boat and were transferred to the Main Island from where we returned to Six
Senses Resort.
This was our last night in Con Dao and was a little bit sad to leave such an island and resort where you have private villa with its own pool on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. But at the same time was looking forward to our next stop which was
Nha Trang.
