Inspired by the talented Alicia Freile, the class responded well to a simple stitch card. I even caught the volunteers making them!
My main assignment here in Hoi An is running a workshop for some of our gals in the disabled group (aka the Sweethearts). Our goal is to make a small product line of arts/crafts to eventually be sold online. Giving them the ability and skills to create a small range of quality crafts, we hope to provide them with a sustainable income, increased self-confidence and independence in their lives. The workshop runs 4 hours a day/5 days a week, but my schedule has been more like 24/7. It's been quite the challenge to say the least. Coordinating translators, seating, wheelchairs, ramps, tracking down supplies, and most difficult, what on earth could I teach them...and what could they master on their own, in one month. The skill levels and physical/mental disabilities vary greatly making it even more challenging. But dozens (and dozens...and dozens!) of iced coffees later, I'm feeling confident that the workshop has been a success. In addition to some handbags and knitted scarves a few of the ladies already make, I have added a mix of handmade notecards and a unique vase designed from chopsticks. I am very proud and grateful for the time and dedication everyone has put into

this workshop to make it happen. And I am honored to work with such strong and humble women. Here are some photos/stories. Stay tuned for the website, we are shooting for the holidays to have the products available for purchase!

Good luck Peter, Robin and Lone -- Remember the camera is on!

Luong, age 46, lost both legs from a bomb when she was 12 years old. She lives alone app. 15 miles outside of Hoi An but stays with Hanh in town so she can attend the workshop. And no matter how many times I practice I still can not pronounce her name properly, but she laughs at me every time I try.

That's right Molly. This is WORKSHOP, not PLAYSHOP or HAPPYSHOP! The gals get critiqued on things like craftsmanship, cutting skills, and color. PS - Look Oscar, that's your recycled Whole Foods Bag in the photo, I use it everyday!

Once they got the hang of it, there's lots of beautiful cut patterns we can make. Cut paper over Vietnamese silk have turned out to be a simple and sophisticated notecard. We're planning on marketing the Peace doves for the holidays.

Simply beautiful
I LOVE THE CHOPSTICK VASE!!! What a creative idea. Though you are only there for a short time, you know that you are leaving the people you have met with knowledge and skills that we help them to continue on with the work you have shared!

the sweethearts
"Disability is not a brave struggle or courage in the face of adversity. Disability is art. It is an ingenious way to live." Beyond argument the Sweethearts demonstrate this truth.
