Sample Embroidered Card
Inspired by the talented Alicia Freile, the class responded well to a simple stitch card. I even caught the volunteers making them! My main assignment here in Hoi An is running a workshop for some of our gals in the disabled group (aka the Sweethearts). Our goal is to make a small product line of arts/crafts to eventually be sold online. Giving them the ability and skills to create a small range of quality crafts, we hope to provide them with a sustainable income, increased self-confidence and independence in their lives. The workshop runs 4 hours a day/5 days a week, but my schedule has been more like 24/7. It's been quite the challenge to say the least. Coordinating translators, seating, wheelchairs, ramps, tracking down supplies, and most difficult, what on earth could I teach them...and what could they master on their own, in one month. The skill levels and physical/mental disabilities vary greatly making it even more challenging. But dozens (and dozens...and dozens!) of iced coffees later, I'm feeling confident that the workshop has been a success. In addition to some handbags and knitted scarves a few of the ladies already make, I have added a mix of handmade notecards and a unique vase designed from chopsticks. I am very proud and grateful for the time and dedication everyone has put into
Me And Lieu
Lieu, age 49, is the eldest in the group. She contracted polio at age 10 (Le on right). this workshop to make it happen. And I am honored to work with such strong and humble women. Here are some photos/stories. Stay tuned for the website, we are shooting for the holidays to have the products available for purchase!
Good luck Peter, Robin and Lone -- Remember the camera is on!

A stitch in time.....
Great work Sherry as always... I love the chopstick vase. May I just add that the online business is a great idea, and I have been amazed that the local post office in Hoi An was regimental in getting my parcel home (UK) in 5 days! I wish the project much luck....Sweet Hearts all of you.
