Our jeep picked us up just after 7am. Our first stop was at Mui Ne’s fishing docks. There are tons of fishing boats at anchor here (see panoramic photo above). It makes for a beautiful picture.
The Red sand-dunes are 3km from Mui Ne, but we first went to the White sand dunes 25km away. En-route we were very glad that we had gotten the jeep. On a scooter we would never have found our way. Also the last part of the road is dirt covered with sand. We might very well have ditched the bike if we’d tried to navigate it. We really enjoyed the jeep ride too. It was great to be moving again, wind in our hair, sun on our skins.
At the foot of the White sand-dunes lies the Lotus Lake. It’s a beautiful sight. We parked and had to walk the last part to the dunes. On the way we passed a little shop and saw a couple of monkeys chained to a post. It’s hard to look at such a thing. Not only are these cute little creatures held captive, there’s also nothing you can do about it. In protest
we refused to buy anything from the owners.
We reached the dunes just past 8:30 and it was already hot as… we’ll you know. We took a bunch of photos, Talita ran down a dune, then we got out of there before we cooked like a couple of turkey’s.
We drove back toward Mui Ne and the driver stopped at this big erosion ditch. We were supposed to go to the Red Canyon… Ooohhhh…We finally got it! This terrible example of erosion has become a “tourist attraction”. I’m sure the Americans and everyone who’s ever seen a real canyon would have a good giggle at the sight of this “canyon”.
After the “canyon” we moved on to the Red dunes. These were disappointing to say the least. The dunes are next to the road, filled with trash and not too impressive. We did manage to get a couple of real nice photos then moved on to the Fairy stream. This is a little stream that flows between trees and more “canyons”. We walked (in the stream) a few hundred meters, then the wind picked up and we got sand blasted so we retreated to the jeep.
That was the end of our excursion and we were relieved. It was nearing 11am and blisteringly hot. We said goodbye to our driver and made a bee-line for the ocean. We had gotten a bit of a tan over the last couple of days and we’re starting to look decidedly “Swedish”; dark brown skin with sun bleached arm and leg hair… Ferdi’s chest hair is still black though.
After an early nap followed by lunch, we sat reading our last day in Mui Ne away. Our time in Vietnam is almost at an end. We’ll be sad to leave but we’re looking forward to the friendly quiet of Thailand and more adventures.
Today’s highlights:
1. The Lotus lake and the White dunes.
2. Delicious banana pancakes for lunch
