Cam Son is an artificial lake located in Luc Ngan district,
Bac Giang province, known for poetic scene. Lake situates amidst the greens, vast corn fields and thatches of ethnic minorities like Tay, Nung, San Chi, Dao nearby.
From Bac Giang city, you move along National Highway 1A, about 60km north-east to Highway 279; turn right on the highway about 5km, then reach the lake. Quite simple for an enduro ride.
Located at an altitude of 300m above sea level, Cam Son lake is the large-scale irrigation project which keeps an important role in the control, provision of irrigation water for agricultural cultivation of Lang Son and Bac Giang provinces. The lake helps to regulate water upstream, treat flood in downstream areas and Bac Giang City.
Few people know that Cam Son Lake is the inspiration for Pho Duc Phuong musician to compose the famous song "Lake on Mountain" but not Nui Coc Lake in Thai Nguyen. Normally, Cam Son Lake stretches around 2,600 hectares wide, but in rainy season, the rising water enlarges its total area up to 3,000 hectares. The lake water is blue all year round,
smooth like a giant mirror of 30m long, the largest segment is 7 km, narrowest is 200m while extreme depth might reach up to 47m.
Cam Son Lake also reminds of a small Halong Bay with many islands and islets scattered in the lake, surrounded by thousands of majestic mountains under an evergreen coverage year round. The blend of earth and sky, mountain layers has brought an extreme simplicity of Cam Son's natural splendor, easily captivates everyone's heart.
Especially in June, July when visiting Cam Son Lake, visitors can admire the red hills of Luc Ngan litchi engrossed in the season, lit the fire in the space of summer by the splendid blue lake, water, clouds.
As a newly exploited destination, Cam Son seems quite pristine, like a jade in the middle of vast forest. Thus, watching Cam Son Lake all day shall never make you bored. In every moment of the day, the lake exudes a particular appeal. It deems a peaceful, spacious vanity tinged with clouds when the dew still disperses the lake surface in the morning. Sunset paranoma behind the mountains interwoven with hills resemble cobweb shadowed on the lake water, reflecting red yellow colors onto the trees that creates a unique picture. Or at the revolving time between day and night, sail onto the lake to catch fish under the stars, you’ll feel like bewildered or placid.
Until today, people still tell the tale of monsters - an obsession of many ancient divers. This place used to be a primeval forest, formerly Cam Son grew many large trees. Divers were very afraid when entering Cam Son because the lake bottom was supposedly to home many species of mysterious monster. However, it is just a legend, people doubt the story.
The people living near Cam Son lake said that there exists no monster at all, but lots of the fishes as big as monster. For the lake is too wide, thus many outlive fishes reach enormous sizes. Previously, each batch of net may be several hundred kg, even some fishes weigh up to 40 - 50kg. Particularly, a carp weighed 54kg was caught by Lang Giang seafood factory workers in 1994. Its tail spreaded as big as a rotor, about half a meter wide if stretching to its utmost extent.
And the story about the fish weighed about 100kg appearing in 1996 is still mentioned until present day. Described as Kappa, it had big, glossy fin, black dorsal up to 1 meter long stucked in the cage of the marine farming factory. Worrying that the cage could not withstand the weight and momentum of such giant creature, they decided to take the gun to shoot the fish instead of lifting the cage. But not waiting for the shot, it broke the cage and escaped. Many years later, the "monster" is believed to survive because some people go fishing at night after that supposed their boats were repeatedly shaken like being affected by the struggling strength of one or several gigantic fishes.
Also there is story about a large-sized turtle as large as half of the mat came ashore to lay egg and dragged two young men into the lake. These stories have proven one fact that Cam Son Lake owns an abundant fish resources to help the lives of local here less difficult, strenuous. There are times, Cam Son Lake has provided major source of fish throughout the region of Bac Giang and neighboring provinces.
Nowadays, sometimes people still caught fish weighing about 20-30kg. Therefore, Cam Son lake cruise to sightseeing, go fishing and hunt monsters become anyone's fun, especially enthusiasts to discover, experience pure nature.
