We arrived in Hué at about 8am. A young man showed us to a reasonably priced hotel but when we tried to check in... guess what?
We had left our passports in Hanoi! Argh!!!!
Unlike the other countries we've been to, Vietnam requires that you leave your passport at reception when checking in at any guest house or hotel. They are supposed to give it back to you when you check out, but our previous hotel didn't and we forgot to ask!
You know that cold feeling you get when you realize that you've done something reeeeaaaaly stupid that could have major implications? Well, I tell ya, there was a lot of that going through us!
Luckily we had copies of our passports so we could at least check in while the hotel arranged to have our passports sent down the next day with another bus crew. We pray God that they arrive here safely! Otherwise... Well, lets not think about that just yet.
Over the last few days Talita had been developing a cold again so we decided to take a nap till lunch (since we didn't sleep all that much
on the bus).
We gave in our laundry and then found a really nice little place to have some fruit shakes and lunch. Ferdi had crispy fried noodles for the first time. Yummy!
We walked to the Notre Dame Cathedral (doesn't look like the one in France) where we saw a big and beautiful statue of Jesus with His arms open, looking over the street. It brings to mind the Bible verse: "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you peace."
After that we went to the Hué Historical Art Museum. Here we saw some really old things as well as a Nguyen Emperor's restored house. At the end we saw an hour long documentary on Hué and it's various sights. Info overload!
The streets here are much less crazy than Hanoi and also cleaner. We couldn't help noticing that the men here can't seem to help themselves. Talita's "western assets" had them turning their heads almost all the way around! One guy even got scolded by his wife! Ferdi found it hilarious but Talita felt a little naked.
We found a silk shop close to our hotel and
Avi & U restaurant
Very nice and eccentric Talita ordered a tailor-made traditional Vietnamese silk outfit. Her measurements were taken and it will be ready for collection the following day. Talita claims she needed a spiffy outfit to go with her spiffy new pearls. Ferdi just thinks his wife will turn even more heads in that beautiful outfit.
To our delight (and that of our bank account) Hue is waaaaay less expensive than Hanoi. Now our budget can take a well deserved break!
You"ll notice from the top of our blogs that Ferdi has discovered the joys of Panoramic photography. Oh what fun!
Today's highlights:
1. Cheap and clean hotel found us.
2. Saw the gorgeous statue of Jesus.
3. Enjoyed fruit shakes at an eccentric café.
