Distance travelled - 46 miles/74 km’s
Yesterday we smelt hot, well today we looked hot after riding through the dirt, mud and rain!!
We’ve hit 278km and I think it’s safe to say we’ve cycled into paradise! Keeree Waree Resort in Ban Krut is absolutely stunning. We’ve rolled into an amazing sanctuary of garden villas that come complete with outdoor showers - what more could we ask for after the messy day we’ve had. And guess who got their daily rituals massages booked in first at the day spa... the cool cats - yes that’s us! So how was our day and why was the shower so freakin good at the end of it?
We left Prachuap Khiri Khan this morning (sorry Daniel no sunrise over the mountains), rode through the Air Force for a quick stop at the WWII memorial before stopping off to feed the monkeys. We then took to the highway with the ipods for a 17km stretch with lots of passing trucks, a downpour of rain and a lot of black grime. We looked real pretty after that leg. But we were pumped and ready for more so on we went to put the
Kel and Mr Policeman
She got his number too! mountain bikes to the real test as we made our way through a jungle of coconut trees, muddy tracks and some rather large puddles.
As we cleared the jungle tracks we stopped off at a little Mum and Dad shop where we stocked up on supplies. And here’s a fun fact for you, this stop off point was at the narrowest part of Thailand measuring 18km across. Most of the riders looked like they had shit themselves so we didn’t feel so bad about our own back sides - see photo below. Just before we left Kel stocked the basket up with local rice cakes, chocolate and oreos to get us through the jungle but every bump she rode over she lost more and more food until 1.5km in there was none left. Need to rethink our strategy but all in all the basket has been a big hit - Kel says thanks Tara!
Further into the ride and onto our third water break we stopped off at a local school. This was one of the highlights of the day as the boys took to the field for a spot of soccer while the girls cuddled up to
the kids. One of the riders Trevor handed out some sticky hands he got made up which they loved. Some a little greedy but Branka managed to keep them in line. We were showered with icecreams, plates of food that resembled genitalia and lots of smiles for the camera. Before we left I was asked up to draw some kids names out of a basket to give out prizes at their assembly. And at this point I think I may have found my calling in life - barrel girl!
We were soon on to our last leg of the day which led us to Kasama’s for a carb loaded lunch. Lasagne, pasta and garlic bread sure was a fabulous break from all the Thai food we’ve been eating, not that we’re complaining as we’re loving the food, it was just a nice break. We’ve been eating machines since starting this ride so not sure that our goal to fit in our too small Bangkok jeans is really achievable. Our daily nutrition consists of a hot breakfast (and sometimes donuts with carnation milk) in the morning followed by power bars, gels, and fruit to give us the energy hits we
need during the day and the best Thai food for lunch and dinner.
After a much needed shower we took a short drive up to Hilltop Temple where we were treated to some terrific views of the coastline and another ice-cream.
So as we come to the end of day 3 some of the riders injuries are starting to come to the surface. Kel had an awesome day today even though her knee was still causing quite some pain. But a couple of anti inflammatory pills, some voltaren cream and 4 Nurofen later she breezed through the stages even clocking up 40km/h down one of the hills. As for me my eye is still a little puffy and the knees are a little on the sore side but I’m hoping another good night sleep will get me back on track. Also praying for no mozzies tonight. Thanks to Scott I have a Qantas eye mask that I'll be sleeping with.
Before we say goodnight special mention goes out to Pete’s Dad John who gave up the support van and took to the road with us for the day. He absolutely nailed it... Go DAD!
Well that’s
it for us, big day tomorrow (116km) and our rest day clear in sight. Weather forecast... rain! The legs are feeling tip top and ready for some hills but we’re just a little sore in places we never thought possible.
Thanks to everyone for all your messages of support. Kel and I read them every morning to kick start our day so please keep them coming.
Time to close our eyes and relax... adios amigos
