“Forty-seven in the bed and the little one said, “I’m crowded, roll over, so they all rolled over and …”
They all rolled over and Rotjana caught each and every one. We now have 47 with the addition of little Goe, or Yo-Go as she sometimes is called. Goe is five and like all the other little girls, she has stolen my heart.
Her story is a bit different in that she never knew her father and she has a wonderful mother who loves her very much and has done everything in the world to make her life a happy, healthy one. The problem is that Goe’s mother has leukemia and is not going to survive much more than another week at best.
I am not sure Goe even knows what’s happening yet. She is here and has been for over a week now. There was no awkward settling in or fear when she came, she just sort of moved in…as if she were on an extended sleep over. If she isn’t aware that her mother will not see next month, it may be harder on her to realize one day when she asks for her, that she
Goe
..and her beautiful smile! isn’t here any more.
If I wasn’t able to see the change and the good that comes from this place, I wouldn’t be able to cope with all this loss.
Good does come, and often here. This week the girls are dancing at the Loy Krathong festivities…There are 26 girls dancing…Malie will join them on Monday to dance at the Sarojin Hotel in Khao Lak.
Part of the kids Christmas money went towards the rental of the costumes for the week, a total of 7,000 baht for the next two weeks. We will need to rent them again in December for the Christmas/Anniversary dances but they are beautiful. We spent three hours applying make-up and hair ornaments today and they packed off in the van for a three hour performance that ends at 11:30pm!!! I didn’t go along this time…the kids are in bed by 9 and I’m often not far behind them!
Miles is reading! He has taken to sitting with the kids English readers and I am encouraging him to read aloud now. Yay! It’s so good to see that milestone covered. Malie starts Thai school next week either in Ban Kuk Khak
or Takua Pa. I am hoping for Takua Pa as one other girl from the orphanage goes there a well and it’s a 10 minute motocyc ride to drop them off.
We got her uniform and shoes the other day and are waiting until we know which school to embroider her name (Malie) and her school onto the shirt front. I’ll send a pic once we have it all together. She is a bit nervous but the experience is for the difference not the education…although math is math in any language isn’t it???
Miles managed to play tank again the other day and missed the bed when he was scrabbling to get up. He stopped himself with his forehead on a table edge. An inch in either direction and it would have been “ungood”. He is fine now, sporting two fabulous black eyes and a lump (still-after four days). He gets tons of attention from the older boys…I just wish I could tell them it was a good muay thai punch instead of just…well…Miles.
I leave for Bangkok in a week for my exam. Pee Kwang is helping to arrange where I’ll stay….the kids get to have
a sleep over at her place in the adjacent village to Phru Teow and they will spend their days here as usual…with Malie at school of course!
I plan to locate a good guest house or inexpensive place to stay so the kids and I can spend a few days there later on this trip. I plan on gathering any items y’all want at the Chatchuchak market there and shipping the lot home from Bangkok.
By the time I get back from Bangkok, busy December will be in full swing! The best month to be around here as it’s full of all sorts of activities. With the organizers, the kids and I will be busy helping put together the Ban Sak beach Christmas party again…hopefully with far less of the politics. We expect to have over 300 children this year with the Thai, Burmese, Mon and Indian children.
