Not knowing how we would pull up after the New Year’s Eve celebrations we had deliberately given ourselves a free day with no plans for daytime New Year’s Day. We reserved the sun loungers opposite our room and spent an enjoyable peaceful day relaxing by the pool and getting another great massage from the lovely beach massage girls. There are 3 different set ups on the Merlin beach and you feel really mean when you walk past one and go to the other but you can’t go to them all. We chose the girls who were set up just up from the beach on the path to the Good View restaurant but only because we had read on Trip Advisor that they were particularly good. We loved how at the end they gave us a bottle of water and a yummy piece of fresh pineapple.
We had organised to meet up with some of our new forum friends that we had met at the Friday night barbecue, that evening. We caught the shuttle bus down to Patong and were very disturbed to hear the reports of the bombings in Bangkok from other passengers on the bus. We were surprised that it
Yummy MaiTai
I am so missing these now we are home! had occurred the previous evening and this was the first we had heard about it. That is all part of being on holiday and you really lose touch of what else is going on in the world.
We were meeting up with Greg & Tracy and Cindy & Lyn at 7.00pm. None of us had any idea if the others would turn up as our arrangements had been made in a drunken haze on the Friday evening so it was great when everyone did show!! Lyn & Cindy were flying into Bangkok early the next morning so they were a little perturbed with the events and certainly hoping that everything would be OK once they got there.
We had another fantastic night. We started with cocktails at the bar of the Patong Beach hotel and then went looking for the No 6 restaurant, we had heard so much about. When we did find it, I was convinced that we were in the wrong place. There were cats everywhere and the place looked really dodgy. It got worse when Cindy & I went looking for the toilet which was a communal set up outside, for the restaurants in the area. You
had to pay, which was fine and Greg gallantly offered to shout us. If you think that paying to use the toilet means you will get a clean one, think again. Without going into too much detail, it was gross and there was no way either Cindy or I could go - boy did I wish I was a bloke.
After that episode I would have been quite happy to leave and go somewhere else, I was way out of my comfort zone but luckily not too desperate for the toilet!! Because we were with new friends I kept my mouth shut (unusual for me) and just decided to get on with it although I sure wasn’t intending to eat much food. We were sitting at a table out on the sand so it was a really nice setting and Greg was in raptures about the huge menu and the crazy low prices. Me, I just wanted to eat and leave but I was well and truly proved wrong. The food was magnificent, the service great and the small bill even better. I was still convinced we were in the “wrong” No 6 but when I checked my forum notes
later, I realised that it was the right one. It is also called Chez Bernard and it was so good, if we had been there longer I am sure we would have gone again. Just remember NOT to use the toilet.
When we left all the girls were desperate for the toilet so we high tailed it down the road till we came across the Impiana and pretended we were staying there. I am sure they probably don’t mind tourists going in for the bathrooms but in our drunken state it was really funny pretending we were staying there and trying to look like we knew where we going. We did come a bit unstuck when we opened the broom cupboard instead!!
Then it was off to the Aussie Bar in Bangla Road. There was a big map of Australia on the wall so we were able to point out where we all lived to Greg & Tracy who really had no conception of how vast Australia is. They were amazed that it would take 8 hours from Adelaide to Melbourne!! I was very excited to find Bundy rum at the Aussie Bar - little things make me happy!! Cindy
& Lyn couldn’t stay for too long as they had a plane to catch early the next morning but they had been great sports staying out so late with us on their last night. They are lovely ladies and hopefully one day we may catch up again.
We hung around for a while longer with Greg & Tracy but as we were booked to go on the John Gray tour the next day we knew we had to get some sleep. We had been told that the pickups are usually late morning so we weren’t too concerned. When we did get home in the early hours we were rather dismayed too see our pickup was actually 9.30 the next morning. Not much sleep for us!!
