Our good luck charm
For 20 baht, drivers purchase these each day for luck. We bought one for the drive to Bangkok airport. Day 1
Arriving at Krabi airport, all the bags were offloaded into the entrance of the building, not on the carousel. Once we figured that out, we went in search of transportation to our hotel. The taxi cartel at the airport is in full swing here, so paying a premium we found a driver who would take us. Unfortunately he didn't know where the hotel was. Dean was all for going back to the airport but luckily the driver eventually engaged his brain and asked some tuk tuk drivers on the side of the road. Eventually we arrived at our destination, which was covered in bamboo scaffolding. Upon closer inspection, yes, it was still open for business.
The lady at reception was very nice and switched rooms for us when she realised it would be too difficult for Eleanor to walk up to the third floor (no elevator). We got a better room on the second floor, but it was at the front of the hotel - with the view being workers on the bamboo. As Eleanor and I settled in, Dean went in search of a travel agent to organise our boat trip the next day to Koh
The wound
A few days old. Lanta.
Smiling with success, Dean arrived back at the hotel after an hour or so, ready to eat. We couldn't go very far for dinner, so ended up at a street cafe on the corner where we ordered some simple food in our best Thainglish. Dean was keen on checking out a nearby market, so he went to investigate that while Eleanor and I went back to the mosquito factory that was also doubling as our hotel room.
Day 2
We were supposed to be picked up between 10:30 and 11 am for the boat trip to Koh Lanta. Nobody had arrived by 11:15, so we rang to find out what was going on. Nothing, apparently. I think we had been forgotten. Anyway, at 11:25 a ute pulled up with an English couple in the passenger seats. Luckily the guy was perceptive and realised that Eleanor couldn't get into the tray with her crutches and graciously sat in the back with Dean and the luggage. A quick trip to the pier to find the boat waiting for us. Yay! Walking the 500m length of the pier as quickly as she could, Eleanor was really struggling by this
stage. The boat was packed with backpackers outside, young families inside and luggage everywhere inbetween. And they were all wondering why the boat hadn't left yet. Once we clambered over the luggage and people we found some seats inside and settled in for the journey.
The boat trip was going along nicely until it started raining. Then people started moving inside and the temperature increased considerably. I was looking forward to getting some fresh air by the end of it. Docking at the jetty in Saladan, we paid a ridiculous price once again to catch a tuk tuk to our 'resort'. The sight of the three of us and our luggage in the tuk tuk was pretty funny and I wish I took a photo. I think some tourists in the truck ahead of us did, so we'll be on Facebook in Sweden.
