Only a week left now and I am sure that as the days pass I will be busy with last minute details. So I decided to write something before I left to sum up if thats at all possible.
I found this quote is a book I am reading at the moment and it seems to sum up travelling, it's by Sir Richard Burton, "One of the gladdest moments of human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of habit, the leaden weight of routine, the cloak of many cares and the slavery of home, man feels once more happy."
If asked what I had enjoyed most it would be difficult to answer, as i have enjoyed so many different things in different places. It's been a very fulfilling experience and hopefully not the last one. There have been things I have missed, my family and friends the most, but also little things like an English cup of tea, the seagulls squawking in the morning, making a simple meal and watching the news even if it is depressing. I am sure when I arrive home I
will miss the sound of the ferries arriving here, the heat as you step outside the door the calls of "taxi, taxi", the smiles of the Thai people who I see on a daily basis and definitely the warm sea.
It has been the most amazing experience and I have absolutely no regrets, I have made lots of new friends, experienced lots of different cultures, food and religions, seen many beautiful sunsets in many beautiful places, learnt some of the sad history of places visited and heard from people who were directly involved, how it was for them. To hear stories from both sides of a conflict brings understanding, compassion and sometimes a different perspective of things. A great learning curve.
Today is my last day before travelling by ferry to Koh Samui, a flight to Bangkok and then home to England. Emotions are very mixed, sad because its the end of this journey and because I have to leave my son who I probably won't see for another year or so. Looking forward to seeing all my family and friends at home and telling them about my adventures. Will miss the warm weather, sea and sunshine every day, not
looking forward to 13degrees and the winter, ugh!! I know there will be lots to do when I get back and I hope that at some stage I will have time, money and energy to plan another trip even if its not as big as this one.
For anyone out there who thinks that travelling is just for youngsters, FORGET IT, us more mature travellers have a wealth of experience tucked under our belts and if I can do it at sixty five I am sure there are plenty of others that can. Don't think old, just think fun, exciting, educational, new friends, nature, the beauty of the world. It's all out there, go, see enjoy.
