A wat, a palm tree, and blue sky... Aah, Thailand.

After leaving Chiang Mai we went off to Ayuthaya, a city famous for its ruins (it was the capital of Thailand until the... 13th? century) to geek out a little, considering our academic backgrounds we were pretty excited. However, as a whole, Ayuthaya proved to be a bigger nuisance than anything else. Firstly, our songthaw driver didn't take us to our requested hostel, but rather feigned misunderstanding and delivered us to a guesthouse (P.U.) with the pushiest manager in the history of pushy businesspeople. We were desperate for a bed and a bathroom (both suffering from some stomach issues) so reluctantly decided to stay, and were therefore forced to endure this woman for 24-hours (every second of contact with her was miserable). We were criticized for only spending a day in the city (You need at least two!), told that the south was "miserable" (raining, cloudy brown water, rip tides, "too dangerous"), and consistantly ripped off. It would have been a great

guesthouse but for that woman, argh. We did quite enjoy the sights though, saw a few ruins and took some great shots. Weren't that that impressed though... I think it's hard to be awe-struck by many ruins after seeing those in Greece and/or Italy. I'm sure Angkor Wat will be an exception though!

We then left for the south, and although getting to our chosen beach/bungalow was an ordeal (par for the course thus far) once we made it we truly felt as if we'd reached paradise. We had a lovely, simple bungalow perching right by the water, a nice little beach, and water with great snorkeling and swimming. We spent a lot of time in the hammock on our porch, just admiring the views. The first day and a half were a little overcast and rainy, but by the afternoon of the second it was gorgeous and sunny... and we both over did it and got burnt. I had a particularly nasty and red burn around my eye (causing it to swell), whereas Bert was red all over... I was playing the battered wife to her red-neck, yikes, - but still, it was so worth it.
