I've spent the last week on the island Koh Samui in Thailand with Ed. We met at Bangkok airport last Saturday and then flew down together. When we arrived we were greeted with a complimentary drink and were told that we had been upgraded to the suite at the top of the hotel! We were driven up to our room in a golf buggy and it was amazing. The room was huge, probably bigger than our first flat will be and you could fit about 4 sri lankan primary school classrooms in there! There was a bed, a living area with sofas and a flat screen TV and a huge bath. The best thing about it was the view over the bay which was breathtaking. I think Ed thought I was a bit crazy because I got so excited about hot showers, comfy pillows and starbucks! Thailand is much more weasternised than Sri Lanka, nobody stared at me because I'm white and all the streets are really lit up.
We spent a lot of time chilling out and lying by the infinity pool but we also enjoyed trying some new things. On Tuesday we went to a thai cooking class.
We learnt how to make massuman curry (tasted like peanuts) and spicey king prawns with tamarind sauce. They were both really tasty. In the afternoon we decided to try the free yoga class offered by the hotel. This was quite funny as the class was definitely not for beginners! It was really hot and we ended up twisting our bodies into crazy positions. On Wednesday we got up early to go to Chaweng beach but unfortunately it was raining so we booked a thai massage. I thought this would be really relaxing and calming but she spent the whole half hour proding the knots in my back and it was so painful! Its probably saved money on physio bills but not quite what I was expecting!
My favourite day was Thursday when we went on a day long tour of the island. We began the day elephant trecking which was fun and we got to feed Anna the elephant lots of bananas. After that we were taught how to make a papaya salad which was very spicey and mostly tasted of fish sauce :S We booked a tour that didn't include any animal shows because we weren't sure how
ethical it is but we ended up being taken to an elephant show. They were very cute and ed was given a thai massage by the elephant with its trunk. We were then taken to view some rocks know as grandfather and grandmother rocks. Then we were taken to see a momified monk who was famous for predicting his own death. We were told to kneel down and shake a box of sticks until one fell out. The number on the stick was then linked to a fortune. Ed did not get a good fortune, it said he would have a very unlucky life 😞 but my fortune said I would have a great life and I would win a lawsuit! We then went to visit a waterfall. On the way there the driver asked if we would like to sit on the rooftop seats on the jeep. We climbed up and he then drove like a maniac up and down loads of hills. It was like being on a really scary rollercoster! The waterfall itself was really pretty and we had a lovely swim in the pool below it. After this we went to Nathon market which was a
local market by the port. At this point the sun was setting and it was really pretty. Finally, we were taken to see the big gold buddha which was very impressive.
We spent our final day on Chaweng beach where we relaxed and I had a mocktail that tasted exactly like a jesticle! (drink from soton uni for those that don't know.) We then decided for a last bit of excitement we would go jet skiing! I am both my father and mothers child. The father in me is what made me suggest jet skiing and the mother in me paniced that we were going to die for the first 5 minutes! Once I got into it it was really fun. We also planted a tree at the resort and maybe one day we will be able to go back and see it! It was an amazing week and I didn't want to leave.
On Saturday we flew up to Bangkok and spent the afternoon wondering around looking at sights and browsing local markets. The Khao San road is surposed to be a famous touristy street but I just thought it was a bit tacky and the normal
markets were more interesting. In the evening we went for drinks at the Mandarin Oriental hotel which is supposed to be the best hotel in Thailand and is also where my parents got engaged! We were a bit worried about getting in so we dressed up smart and tried to saunter in like we owened the place. It worked and soon we were having drinks an a beautiful terrace overlooking the river. It was the perfect way to end our holiday.
Today Ed flew back to London and I met up with a friend from Sri Lanka and looked round Lumphini park. Tomorrow I begin my tour and the next stop is Chiang Mai in north Thailand!
