Koh Samui - Chaweng
Carl sunbathing - the weather quickly changes 31 October - Koh Samui
BO PHUT We stayed 4 nights at Cocooning in the fishing village (Bo Phut) it was pretty deserted most of the time with restaurants empty, we thought no one was here. We went for a walk when it fined up one day to the other end of the beach and my god we found hundreds of people on the beach in front of their expensive resort making the most of the break in the rain…literally hundreds of people, I was amazed. Where have all the people been - obviously within the confines of their hotel and never venture out for shopping or a meal - although who can blame them, its raining its pouring …… I wish I had brought my gumboots!
Eat some clean good though (see picture) apparently this is like a Certificate from the Health Department, we thought it was a joke!
LAMAI We stayed in LaMai for 2 nights which is next beach on from Chaweng. BT Mansion, would recommend for backpackers, back from the beach but only NZ$27.00 and is clean, TV, fridge, AC, etc.
BT Mansion It was right next to the Night Life,
that being open bars with Thai girls for to rent. So many white guys with Thai girls around this area, and most of them young…walking hand in hand, where the guys have rented them for the duration of their holiday. Then there are the older white guys, in their 60’s renting girls in their 20’s. One guy we saw the other night in the local bar about 65 was totally wasted and was groping at his date (a pretty little 25 year old) like a lecherous old fart making fish mouth movements at her face.. So we sat up at the bar at the bottom of the street watching all the girls arrive at work, 3 to a motor bike. Unfortunately did not get to see what happened after that - Carl introduced me to Long Island Iced Tea.
CHAWENG We are them moved to Chaweng which is my favorite area in Koh Samui just cos it has the most to do in way of shopping, restaurants and bars. We stayed for 3 nights in this fantastic place, called AKWA Guest House. Excellent value for money and definitely recommend, NZ$28.00 per night. We have been using tripadvisor, sawadee
Koh Samui - Bophut
Clean but uninspiring food and asia rooms to pick up special deals.
AKWA Guest House Our only complaint would be they have opened a NightClub on the next block that rocks LOUDLY until 2-4am in the morning, so if you are a light sleeper this wont work, unless you want to join them!
But the sweetest deal is a place we stayed at for 2 nights in Chaweng…..we have found a real special on the internet, a place you cannot book into except through Sawadee and cos they have not finished all the rooms and still doing some planting etc so cannot fully advertise. It will be about NZ$300 a night, but we got it for NZ$80.00. So time to pull on the luxury reserves. Could not afford to eat there, just sleep!! And it is just fantastic, see pictures. I feel like a normal white lazy rich westerner!!! And best of all it’s a beautiful sunny day…horray!!
Dara Samui Hotel Whats New - I found the local Rum, Samsong, yum! Food and drink much cheaper in Chaweng and Lamai, we can get a meal and a beer and a wine for 2 of us for like $NZ13. You can get your clothes
Koh Samui - Lamai
Girly Bars in Daylight washed and dried for $1 a kg in 24 hours. Well we have not done much with all this rain, but it has not stopped us venturing out in our plastic raincoats. (See picture of our walk to Tesco). Where are those bloody gumboots!!!
It is amazing when you are sitting in one of the Thai Malls, sipping your latte and munching on your dunk’n donut…..you could actually be in any Mall in any western country, it is such a contrast to life outside. For most of the people their homes are tin shacks, their shopping is done from stalls under canvas, their business relies on the tourist or selling food, their work is slow, boring and over resourced. Their family transport is one motorbike which will take up to 5 including the 4 month old baby. Their food is pre-cooked, smelly and shared with the flies amidst the smell of the drains.
On the beach at night (if its not raining) they set up their restaurants and bars every night, from the tables, chairs, fairy lights, decorations, everything is setup and put away every night. Its just paradise sitting on a nice night and they sell lanterns
which are about 1 foot wide and 2 foot high cylinders that they light a flame at the bottom and the float up into the sky to make your own star….then at 8,000 feet the flame goes out. I also worked out how come so many fireworks around, and they sell them on the beach at night,…like huge ones like the Wellington guy fawkes show. It is amazing you can sit at a bar with the beach 4 feet in front of you watching lanterns turn into stars and firework displays……all in the middle of the flight path too!
2 November 2007 BANGKOK Well we took the early morning plane v another train journey and we are back in Bangkok, it’s the weekend and we could not believe how busy Bangkok was….every street was lined with stalls, grills lined the streets cooking whole fish, with people eating and drinking at tables filling out the footpath. Malls and streets filled up with people eating and shopping, streets were lined with people waiting for buses, tuk tuk or taxis. Whistles going non stop from the men directing traffic out of mall car parks. Malls after malls after malls and if
you are not in a mall shopping the streets are lined with shops. You all shuffle along the road never daring to cross to a shop on the other side or you will never get back. On Friday night outside the Mall the huge empty space was filled with Drinking Stations, each one branded by a make of beer, each had a band and was framed by benches selling food and large cylinder kegs that were attached to your table.
We are staying at the Grand Watergate which is NZ$40 for deluxe room (normally 32.00 standard but none available). The place is not fancy and has no windows but for the price in the middle of Bangkok shopping district, its pretty economical and includes breakfast.
