Koh Phangan - Haad Salad Beach

17 October 2007

The Trip out of Haad Saddt - We had read good reviews of Salad Hut Bungalows on the other side of the island so we emailed for a Deluxe room with a fan for NZ$40. We left Haad Saddt on a rainy day in an open truck with a cover with 8 others, across wet clay hilly roads (see picture below of sample of a Koh Phangan rural road). It was a memorable ride to say the least, at stages he was flinging the steering wheel from far left to far right to stop from skidding on the wet clay up hill roads. At one stage he was reversing and his mate got out to run up the hill - we thought ahh maybe to see what was coming as he kept reversing…but the road was quite wide?….then we worked it out he was reversing to get a run up! And the other one was checking to see how much of a run up he needed. But we made it, the packs were completely saturated and so was everything inside…lesson learnt, put the rain cover on the packs in monsoon

Our Bungalow
season!

Accommodation -Ended up with AC superior room for NZ$50, They were quite full (only 10 bungalows) so were not keen on giving us the cheaper fan price.

This place is fantastic though, it is just amazing what you can get for NZ$50.00, we have AC, hot shower, 24x7 power, a huge deck, 6 paces one way to the beach and 6 the other way to the pool. White sheets that fit the mattress and a top sheet! And a mini bar……..with glasses and cans of coke and bottles of water. Great restaurant with the mats and low tables, of course our backs are too old to sit at those! Salad Hut Bungalows

The only draw back is NO toilet paper down the toilets - bloody toilets again! And these things that sound like a cross between a frog and a duck - fruck maybe? They are so loud - like those yellow trumpets you have at the rugby. Same as Haad Saddt they had loud insect things that were like cicadas, they were really loud as well like a giant mosquito buzz with the volume up 1000 times.

The bathroom smells, its modern, only 1 year old and closed in, maybe the river at the back of the units where the frucks live.

Food - Carl enjoys their big bowls of porridge and fruit for breakfast, and today indulged in a big English breakfast! Trying different restaurants down the beach each night and getting away with no more than NZ$10-15 for dinner, excluding drinks of course. I have found a nice glass of chilled red wine for NZ$4, so swapped lunch yesterday for 2 of those! Last night for pudding was pancake cooked with slices of banana in it, with condensed milk, ice cream and chocolate sauce - yum!

Well nothing else to report, still just sleeping, reading, eating and swimming. Books are going to be an issue, actually not many English speaking people around let alone books. Had a bit more rain on this side of the island, one minute sunny and hot next down pour with thunder and lightning.

Off to the next bay tomorrow, need to get back to reality with less luxurious accommodation.
