Edit Blog Post
Finally on the beach with electricity and wifi working at the same time, and enough bandwidth to get onto the internet. So, catchup time. This will be the third time I try to write this entry, so lets hope Travelblog doesn't loose it again when I hit save. Ahhh technology....
LAST DAYS IN BANGKOK:
Bangkok is one big shopping mall. From cheap and nasty rip-offs, through good quality fakes, to the real thing; you can buy anything here (Except maybe a cheap pair of pretty heals for a smart night out... But that's another story).
We are not in Bangkok over a weekend so unfortunately we have to miss out on our favourite Chatuchak weekend market, but we head off to Sukhumvit and the famous Pantip Plaza aka IT Centre first. If it is battery powered or plugs into a power socket, you can get it here in two versions- fake and real- and where price is concerned both are negotiable. We stock up on Thai 3G and phone cards, browse through the £40.00 tablets and £5.00 versions of AutoCAD, and have to fight the urge to pick up a mini iPad immediately. Yes, the "dirty movies" sellers
are still hanging out behind the food hall as they have since time immemorial. Pantip can be quite daunting, but don't fear being led down the garden path. Everyone is so friendly and honest about what they are selling that they can only be Thai.
Next off to Platinum mall. 6 storeys of hugely discounted fashion. The idea is to find a pair of throw away heals for one night out in Bangkok. Throw away, because there is no room in my luggage to take them along, and one night as Andrew has told me that he is taking me for a surprise birthday dinner and that the venue has a strict dress code. The only shoes I brought with me are the flip flops in my carry on luggage, and the trainers on my feet when we left London. Sadly the girl cannot shop under pressure and on the big day I end up in the second most expensive shoe shop in Bangkok in tears and forking out £60.00 ( after discounts and further negotiations) on shoes. It's a sin but the shoes are really pretty and I have made room for them to travel with me!!
Next stop, massage. It took too many days to get to this. We discovered Siam Herbal Massage just next door to the new DCS Mahanakhon development a sky train stop away from our hotel. Ironic - thinking I was rid of DCS for good! The owner speaks Japanese so that convinced us. First up a traditional Thai massage. This is like doing yoga but without having to get into the positions yourself. Hardly gentle but a good way to stretch out the aeroplane legs. Next day, a lovely oil massage. This is what Thailand is about....
Andrew took me to the Sirocco restaurant at the top of the Lebua Hotel for dinner and live jazz on my birthday. Yes, I know, spoilt rotten! The Lebua State Tower is the second tallest building in Bangkok at 64 floors and has the highest open air restaurant in the world. The views are amazing. They shot scenes from The Hangover 2 here. If I was tech savvy I would post a clip here, but, ......
On Thursday we left Bangkok for Koh Mak island.
