Anping tree house is not a tree house in the sense of a house built on purpose in a tree, rather an old abandoned merchant's house that has been completely overtaken by Banyan trees, giving it the look of a home from a nightmarish fairytale. The house is now in ruins with only parts of the roof still intact, and parts seem more tree than building.

The exhibition inside the house explains that as well as looking romantic, the Banyan tree has a lot of significance in Taiwanese folk stories and allegories, as it is a tree that seems useless (the wood is brittle) but in fact provides shade under which people can gather, relax and shade from the sun (the moral being, that everything has its place in the world, even the things that seem annoying or pointless).
