“Travel is more than the seeing of sights, it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” - Miriam Beard

Korea wasn't really on our original itinerary. We were planning to fly home from Japan but Ammi decided she wanted to see the World Expo in Shanghai. Since the Expo wasn't for 10 days after we left Japan we figured why not kill some time in Korea. Our experience wasn't really what we had hoped for, but it was partly our fault. We didn't have a guide book so we had to rely on internet forums, which were mostly about people teaching English in Korea. Also, we stayed in a bad part of Seoul near the university, so every morning we'd have to step over a passed out Korean kid who had too much to drink. A pair of broken eye glasses would be nearly and their faces would be lying in a pile of puke. Apparently Koreans have a big problem with alcoholism as well as personal finance. Another part of it was the fact that we were coming off a “Japan High” and everything would look bad in comparison. We were back in a country where people shove onto the subway and stare at us. If we had gone to Korea before Japan it might have been fine. Also, maybe we had the wrong kind, but I thought Korean BBQ was just OK, not what I had expected at all. Also, Korea is pretty expensive, I thought it would be more like China. It's kind of funny that there is an entire television channel devoted to “Starcraft” competitions. What I did find interesting, though, was the Korean writing system, Hangul, which was named the most logical system of writing ever invented. Supposedly it can be learned in a few hours. Hangul has helped create a highly literate society and has been adopted by a number of minority languages who have never had a writing system before. We did end up enjoying the Korean Folk Village outside Seoul. Korea isn't a bad country, I think we just didn't have a very good plan of attack in place.

***TIPS FOR TRAVELERS***

-DON'T STAY AT THE XXX HOTEL IN SEOUL!!! OMFG this place sucks! It's an apartment with 15 beds in it. The owner seems like he's on drugs and tried

to get us to sleep in the living room. We saw him give away reservations and not give money back when they showed up angry. It may be cheap but it's not worth it.
