Halloween was kind of brutal this year. Usually Jenna and I are thinking of costume ideas a month early and we both have awesome ideas and execution. However, being in Korea as we are, it is not very easy to find a costume shop; A, because they don’t really have costume shops, and B, because we can’t speak Korean and C, if they did have a shop it would only fit midget size people. That being said our costumes were not that cool or original. But we had fun, a lot of fun. Jenna dressed up as an angel; well she really just had a halo and some white wings that she wore with normal clothes. My costume was even worse I had a wig, just a wig. Originally I was planning on being Fonzie from happy days, but the wig was black so no dice there. I decided to be Johnny Cash, black wig (Elvis style) and wear all black. This I thought was a very good idea, however, when we got to the bar everyone kept calling me Elvis. So I decided that that was good too, so Elvis and Johnny Cash. Well we were sitting with friends and
one said you look like Wolverine too so I said ok, Wolverine, Elvis, Johnny Cash or yeah and originally the Fonz. Then I looked at myself in the mirror and thought wow I look like Neil Diamond, and many people agreed with that. So by the end of the night I had many characters to choose from there was Fonzie, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Neil Diamond and Wolverine. Surprisingly I also won the costume contest. How that happened I have no Idea! Jenna and I were both screaming really loudly and I won a free pitcher of beer. Halloween at school was absolutely adorable. The little kids especially were very cute. We carved a pumpkin and passed out candy. All that day we did fun Halloween word searches and activities. The kids were so hyped from all the candy it was difficult to do anything else. In Korean the kids don’t really celebrate Halloween like we do back home. This is because there aren’t any traditional American neighborhoods. All the buildings in Korea are apartments so the kids can’t really walk around the block and collect candy. When I asked some of my students what they were going to do for
Halloween they just looked at me with a blank face. Most of them treated it like any other day and the ones that did dress up for school didn’t do anything else related to Halloween that night. I heard one student all day that was going to trick or treat that night and it was only in her apartment building. I think she could do alright candy wise in a Korean apartment building because ours is 12 floors with about 40 apartments on each floor and our building is on the small side.
Fall here is extremely beautiful I have not seen so many bright red, purple orange and yellow trees ever. We went to a traditional Korean folk village to view all the different traditions from long ago. They had many museums and galleries to walk through. The Korean folk village was fun and it made you feel like you were walking through a traditional Korean village. It reminded me briefly of the Renaissance festival we have back home. There were many people who were traditionally dressed and were working on crafts and food in the same way they would have in the past. That was all fine
and good, but there is always something weird or disturbing in Korean culture. Weather it is the food or the traditions there is always something that makes you say what the @$#%^$! were they thinking. Case in point there is a picture on this post that is a kit for child birth; my caption is “this is not right!” If you look closely at this picture, the Korean kit for child birth it includes a sigh, two pairs of scissors and a giant dish, there are also two pointed sticks in there just for good measure, I mean how many sharp objects do you need to deliver a child.
The photo that I tagged “we saw this sign on a bridge over the freeway”, Jenna really did. On the taxi cab ride to the Korean Folk Village there was a giant banner hanging over the highway that read “Now Jump”, just ridiculous. Things like that happen a lot and what I mean by “things like that” are poorly worded signs that are poorly placed. Poorly worded signs in English plus poor placement of those signs equals hilarity! ! !
