I tried to make an entry from last weekend but there were no pictures and no interesting stories to tell. I just went out with some friends, ate spicy food, drank soju and generally had a good time. This week I was hoping would fly by. It did. Being rainy season, it's been either sprinkling, pouring, or humid as hell here. I've heard in the next couple weeks it's supposed to be the hottest all summer. Not something I'm looking forward to.
Friday night I was supposed to get off work early and go see the Kia Tigers baseball game. Thanks to the rain the game was cancelled so I got the pleasure of staying at work. I met up with friends afterwards and we had some beers. I ended up going to noraebang for over three hours with Tonya, a Canadian guy named Kenton and a Korean gal named Hyunju. I couldn't really speak on Saturday morning.
I tried my best to hydrate and pull all my energy together because I went to MUDFEST!! I travelled by bus with Andrew, his girlfriend and Youn Kwan. I think we got on the wrong one because the normally bearable 50
minute ride turned into a 90 minute one...oops! I got to the beach at around 4:30. I met up with Tonya and we walked through the boardwalk, past sand sculptures of turtles and snails, through mud caked foreigners and down a crowded street to get to the place we were staying. In total there were 18 people calling this three-room apartment home for the night.
I shed down as many material possessions as possible and headed to the mud festivities. I with with a couple guys from here in the Goon, Andre and Xander. Xander met some rugby buddies and we agreed to all go into the mud wrestling pit together. I was one of the smallest people in there O_O We played a game where whoever was holding the rugby ball got tackled. It was messy and slippery and disgusting and a lot of fun. My eyes were burning from the mud and I got scraped up and bruised but definitely worth it. Covered in mud, we went through some sort of mud slide inflatable toy and then promptly made our way to the beach. We de-mudded whilst tackling eachother into the ocean. I had my poor phone
in a ziplock in my pocket but it was no match for the waves and clothelines. RIP LG Anycall -7/17/10 we hardly knew ye.
After getting respectably muddy and rowdy we trekked back to the apartment. By this time the Korean crews were deflating all the mud festivities. After eighteen people took turns showering themselves off from mud and sand we were ready to enjoy the night. It was raining on and off the entire time but we didn't mind at all. We ate at a place where you grilled your own shellfish. It was pretty good, I wouldn't eat shellfish every day of my life but when in Rome. I got a nasty burn on the underside of my wrist when reaching over the coals and one of the snail-like creatures decided to explode in a mess of boiling water and carnage.
During dinner we heard fireworks and so a few of us left the group to seek them out. There was a boat about .5 km out in the sea shooting them off. It was a beautiful sight to watch against the rolling waves and mobs of people standing and gazing upwards. We went back and
paid for everything, only 13,000 a person...not bad at all. Next we walked in search of a party atmosphere. Three of us ended up standing in front of the live music stage for about 45 minutes. The music sucked. I don't think I will ever fully appreciate K-pop, though I don't mind the dancers so much. Once the stage took a 30 minute break we wandered away in search of something else to do. The group reconvened at the beach and we all danced and drank near this tent where a dj had set up. We must have stayed there nigh three hours just talking, dancing and carrying on. Someone decided to steal one of our bags which had quite a few valuable things in it. I felt bad, there were a lot of technology casualties this weekend.
The crew all started to trickle back in to the place we were staying around three or four o'clock. I was dog tired from all the galavanting around, rough-housing and the noraebang marathon from the night before. I miss America where most of the time you can find a bed to sleep in or at the very least a carpeted surface.
The wood floor didn't do me any favors in the comfort department but I dozed off sometime before sunrise. I woke up the next morning to the sounds of cooking as Tonya was preparing some potatoes. I hovered around for a bit but knew it was my breakfast to be had. A man-posse struck out for greener breakfast pastures. We found that many places were just far too busy. We finally settled on a Korean restaurant where we ate bibim-bap. (the mixed rice and vegetables and red sauce dish) I was blistered, burned, scraped, dirty, sandy and exhausted so I said 'nay' to heading back to the beach this afternoon and instead went home. I had a fantastic time at the Boryeong Mud Festival and had experiences that I will remember for a long time.
