Hey all, another week has passed. It was a bit rainy here most of the time but there were a few glimmering days of Minnesota-like summer weather. I went out to lunch on Monday with the plant president at OCI which was pretty cool, he's the #1 guy in the Gunsan plant. We dined at a Japanese restaurant near my school. I ate some raw fish (Wae) which is just eaten dipping in some kind of sauce. There was tempura shrimp as well. The best course was some big pieces of raw tuna, they were served very cold (almost frozen) and I wrapped them in some dried seaweed and dipped in some sort of oil. It was a very unctious taste, quite good. Lastly we ate some cold soba noodles. It was so funny when the waitresses (wearing kimonos of course!) put the noodles in front of us because everyone stopped talking completely for almost ten minutes while eating the noodles. All I heard were loud slurping noises. The Koreans make a lot of noise when they eat or chew gum. It's incredibly annoying to me but not considered rude so I never say anything. The big boss, Mr. Pak was
seated right next to me and asked me a lot of questions, I get the impression he was practicing his English as his private tutors were also in attendance along with my cohorts QJ and Mr. Yu.
Thursday night I went out with some of my foreign teacher friends because there was no school on Friday over here. Thank you Buddha! If you didn't get to wish him a happy birthday it's too late now. Andrew and I wanted to go somewhere on our day off but we're being cheapskates nowadays so nowhere too extravagant. We decided to scope out Daechon beach in Boryeong.
It was about a forty minute bus ride north of Gunsan and we ended up waiting fifty just for the bus to come. Once we got there it was another fifteen minute bus ride to the actual waterfront. The weather on Friday was amazing beach weather. The water was freezing as Andrew explained, the Yellow Sea doesn't get much circulation. It was still nice to walk in the sand and get some rays though. We had a few Coronas and watched people run around on their day off. I was shocked to see not
a single girl or guy in a bathing suit. For as many beautiful women as there are here not one of them was willing to show it off! Very strange for a beach I thought. We got back to the bus station around five thirty or so only to find out the next bus wasn't until eight forty. What the hell!? We had to putz around for three hours near the bus station, we wandered around the nearby E-Mart for about half of that time.
When we finally got back I had to shower, the white sand was really sticky and didn't come off of skin without a fight. We met up with Kyung Yun and Yun Kwan around ten. YK's friend Patrick was there as well. We got down to business and were all pretty cheerfully full of soju and side dishes by midnight. Patrick's wife and his brother (I think?) met up with us after that and we managed to hitch a ride home around three. Friday was definitely my most exciting day.
Yesterday I didn't do anything. Just stayed home and watched a lot of movies and tv and played computer games. I did go with Andrew to the "Ghetto Party" that Aaron was hosting at his coffee shop though. Being a ghetto party we thought we should dress up all ghetto and everything. Apparently Koreans dont dress up for the beach or for parties. We were the only ones looking like gangsters...oh well. There were some freestyle raps and other performances and Aaron was allowed to serve beer instead of just coffee so that was cool. I didn't feel like doing the bar scene for a third night in a row so I called it early.
Today I did a bit of cleaning up, laundry and more being lazy. I did manage to roast 3 lbs of almonds in my new toaster oven though! (Thanks Jocelyn). I didn't realize when I bought these almonds at Costco a month or so ago that they were raw. I spent a couple hours having to do them in batches but it allowed me to season each batch a little differently. They taste much better now.
That's about it for me. No news on the changes I mentioned last week but hopefully this week there'll be some progress.
