How to ... drink in Singapore
We had heard many contrasting views on Singapore and when we arrived in the pouring rain I have to say we were less than impressed. We could barely see outside the windows of the bus to actually see the views of the city at we were entering. We ran straight into a cab and into our hostel. Luckily we were put in seperate rooms because Sam had a drunk freak in hers and I had two of the coolest chicas you'll meet in mine. As it was Sam and I were both knackered after the long trip from KL in the rain and having to say goodbye to the boys at 5am; so were really unsure about whether or not to go our for so called ´ladies night´in town. Luckily I met Jo and she persuded us to join her and Luisa for a couple of drinks. Ladies Night in Singapore is BRILLIANT! (if you're a lady😉 We bascially went out in Singapore, which is a really expensive city for a total of about 2 pounds. They let you in for free and then give you free drinks (my kinda town) and every bar
has a different deal on. We went to the Bellini Room, where we got 5 free drinks, and not just your crappy watered down shit, real drinks like actual nice wine or double G&T's, with waiter service, oh my god! So we got tipsy on free booze then headed into the jazz lounge where we got up and struted our stuff on the dance floor after it had been vacated by the pros and made fools of ourselves (the way everynight of course ends!) We then went to another bar downstairs where the hot mama from the Bellini Room was singing again and some Latin American babe pulled Sam up onto the stage and made her shimmy and shake her booty like no-one was watching. Very amusing ... for the rest of us!
I again got very excited about the fact that we were staying in Little India and could therefore get vast amounts of yummy food very quickly. Little India was a really gorgeous place to stay and was full of all the hussle and bussle of street stalls and resturants. From here we walked around the city and even went to an IT fair, how geeky are
we?! I had had enough of my bloody camera and its crappy blue screen (a problem that occured during the paddy field incident and was never corrected) turned out I don't have enough money for the one I wanted but it was kinda fun to have a day or two where we were just walking around and getting a feel for the place. We walked for miles around the area by the national museum and saw the random sight of esculators outside the just went up a little hill! The Arts collage just near our hostel was an incredible building and generally just made me wish we had a more inspiring building for my degree coz studying Interior Architecture in a grotesque 70's monstrocity wasn't great. We also took a little time out for some shopping in Chinatown and finally finding a replacement for my jade necklace.
Our big touristy moment was when we forked out the cash for the night sarfari. It's just kind of a huge gimmick where all the tourists are taken round the zoo in a little tram and you can see all the animals in the dark. Only problem is of course that it
is dark and therefore you can't see all the animals! We did get off the tram though and managed to have a walk around an area where the animals are more accessible and we walked through the bat enclosure in the dark, very scary! We also got a look at the fire show which was quite entertaining coz they get a guy up from the audience and try to make him eat fire etc. We did however decide againist waiting in the massive queue for The Big Show, think it was something to do with juggling monkeys or the such, not really my scene. (I was a big kid though and had a huge Ben and Jerrys that made me quite sick!)
It was very strange when it came to our last night, i couldn't believe that I was going to be on my own again after 3 months of traveling with others and that I was going to be leaving Asia. It was very scary and even though Sam was feeling pretty shitty we decided to try and do something nice on our last night. We decided on dinner and a visit to the worlds largest fountain! Coolio,
No?! Well it was actually really funny we were under the impression that there was a show on but when we got there it was just some lights and music playing, I was expecting so flicking and dancing water in tiem with the music at least! It was actually the worlds biggest disappointment - We had to laugh! They then place light lettering on the water to send messages to the crowd. We where up on the balcony and below us we could see a bit of a hubbub and written on the water were the words 'will you marry me?'. I of course wanted to vomit and would be mortifed to be proposed to in such a way; unless it was in a cheesy, ironic kind of way! But it was actually quite cute coz the girl was lapping it up and stood there beaming, clutching at her bouquet of red roses, as her guy got down on one knee in front of the words written on the fountain and produced the ring. ....... Well of course she said yes! The whole crowd was clapping and cheering, defo Asia at it's cheesiest and it's best!
It was very
strange to say goodbye to Sam at the airport as I boarded my plane to Brisbane and her back to England. I most definitely didn't want to be leaving Asia. It has without a doubt been one of the best and most difficult times of my life. I love this place, every country different but with the same craziness that characterises each one. It has been an adventure and I will be back, oh yes I will be back!
