The Friendship Highway linking Lhasa to Kathmandu in the Himalayan Range (in realidad is a dirt road ...) is amazing. Probably it is called a highway because it is a way high up....( or at least I cannot think of any other reason.)
The first thing you notice is the contrast as you traverse between the mountains from north to south. The southern nepali side is covered with lush vegetation and clouds while the northern Tibetan side is dry, arid, rocky.a 1000m beneath us the greyish water of the Bothe Kosi... We are traveling on an unnervingly dangerous winding road ... I took the local bus to Kathmandu and had my first encounter with the local political problems, as the maoists kidnapped 2 people from a village nearby the border and the villagers blocked the road in response...Kathmandu is a great place when you arrive from China. The food is good, You can find a decent hotel without selling your kidney, there is always something happening, everyone speaks English and Shopping is great and cheap. Ideal place to get a rest ( and hammered) before and after the Everest. ( however in a long run you easily get tired of
the dirt, the dust the smoke of the 2stroke engines and the ever present noise.
After I got my act together after my trek, I wondered around Pashupatinah Temple and witnessed how the hindues cremate their dead. When a person dies they take him to the Bagmati River. The river transfers the person to the next life. The family -with the instructions of a ceremonial master- washes the body in the water, and strip the clothes off and let the river bring it away. After the family says goodbye the body is placed on top of a wooden pyre. The eldest son lit up a piece of wood and walks around the body 3 times, before lit up the fire with the help of the wood placed on the face of the body. Once the wooden sticks placed on the head are burning the ceremonial master covers the body with straw and more wood and slowly cremate the body for 24 hours. After 24 hours burning on the pyre the ashes are released to the river so the soul could get across into the next life... Very peacefull very serene ritual. Lacking of drama and is not distasteful at all.
The ritual is the same as the one in Varanasi at the Ganges river, but in a lot smaller scale...
after Pashupatinah I visited a Tibetan buddhist gompa called Boudhanath. I was expecting many tibetans ( the Lonely Planet says this is the place to witness tibetan religion and culture at freedom ) so I was dissappointed to see only a couple of buddhist monks and that was it : (((
also visited the Swayambunath temple also called as Monkey temple, because of the hundreds of mokeys residing in the area.
In 1482 after King Yaksha Malla's death his sons divided the kingdom into 3 parts and 3 rival capitals born of the division. Kanthipur ( Kathmandu) Lalitpur ( Patan) and Bhadgaon ( Bakthapur) respectivly homes of the king's sons. Todays the 3 different yet very similar Durbar Squares ( Palace Squares with temples and other important buildings scattered around) give you a glimpse of what it looked like each in its heyday. I like Bakthapure the most, as it is larger than the other 2 and its winding streets are perfect for an afternoon stroll.
I also have visited in the valley the famous Changu Narayan Temple, one of
the oldest temples in Nepal. I loved the richly carved wood details on the buildings as well as the ancient style of the architecture present even in newer buildings.
A Friendship Highway (barátság Sztráda) mely összeköti Lhasát Kathmanduval, valójában egy poros kis út. A különbség a nepáli és a kínai oldal közt számottevő. Míg a Himalaya vonulatainak északi oldala száraz, kopár, addig a déli- nepáli- oldalt sűrű zöld növényzet borítja, s szürke esőfelhők takarják el a napot. Lenn a völgyben a Bothe Kosi folyó zúg 1000 méterrel alattunk.
Remek fotótémát nyújt a placcon kergetőző, egymást fenyegető majmaival...
1482-ben Yaksha Malla király halála után a birodalmat a király 3 fia örökli, és 3 részre osztja. Három főváros születik, Kantipur (Kathmandu) Bandipur (Bakthapur) és Lalitpur (Patan) ahonnan a három királyfi rivalizálva irányította a birodalmat. Örökségül hagyva az utókornak a három város Durbar Tere tanúskodik a királyfiak rivalizálásáról, a három különböző, de mégis nagyon hasonló palota tér, és a palotát körülvevő templomok melyek egyenként s megcsodálandó építészeti remekművek. Nekem Bakthpur tetszett a legjobban, hol a Durbar Teret más fontosabb terekkel kacskaringós hangulatos kis utcák kötik össze, tökéletes helyszín egy kellemes délutáni sétához.
