This morning we had planned to go to Bako National Park, but Elysia's eye was causing her more trouble so we decided to go to the hospital instead (fun fun). It was still extremely painful, sensitive to light and blurry. We just wanted to make sure that we knew what was going on and that there was no permanent damage being done to the eye. This time Elysia told the doctor what kind of medications that she wanted (she wanted dexamethasone to help clear up the inflammation), because it wasn't going away. At this point we were thinking that all the doctors were probably wrong and that it was likely a viral and not bacterial infection in her eye. But we were desperate to get her eye better so that she could see more of the trip. She was making the best of the situation, but not seeing any progress in a week was a bit aggravating. Again it cost us another 25 bucks or so. Gotta love the cost of healthcare in Malaysia!
We then spent the rest of the day hanging out in Kuching and explored the city.
We went to the Sunday market, which is very
much like a Sunday market at home, except with very different fruit for sale. Perhaps since we've been in Asia for so long now, that the novelty may be waring off. So we didn't stay long at the market (just long enough to buy some more Kek Lapis for later). After the market, we went to the Sarawak Museum which has excellent exhibits on the Sarawak people and the state itself. It is probably one of the best museum's we've ever seen, and it really gives you a sense of the politics of Borneo and how it came to be. We also wandered through a nice garden behind the museum and then explored the streets of Kuching a bit. It's a very beautiful little city, and much more modern than we had expected. In fact, all of Borneo is much more modern than we had expected. Although the backdrop is a very rugged and jungly terrain, everything in the cities is clean and very well developed, and the roads or traffic aren't bad at all. Kuching is small, but has all the modern amenities (even the hospital is very clean and modern). Of course, no malaysian city is complete without
a ton of shopping malls!
Before dinner, we took a river cruise that was supposed to be a 'sunset river cruise' but, because it started to rain just as we were leaving for the boat, it ended up being a 'sit inside out of the rain river cruise'. It was still nice, but the view was a bit impeded by the stream of water running down the windows. This seems to be one of the themes of the trip- every time we wanted to go and see some mountains (there are a few visible in Kuching, but probably better on the water), it rains and blocks the view. Luckily, the rain stopped a little over half through the cruise, so we could go back on deck for the last bit (but no mountains). For dinner, we went to a little bistro that served excellent local cuisine (called The James Brook Bistro). Elysia ordered a local rice wine, which turned out to be extremely potent, while Mike enjoyed a mug of Tiger beer. When the food arrived, Mike took the camera to try and take a picture, but the strap was wrapped around Elysia's wine… so over it went. This
was really just doing a favour for Elysia (only the finest of wines are served in shot glasses…). It wasn't such a busy day, but we were hoping that it would be enough that Elysia's eye could get better to explore a national park tomorrow!
