The streets of Melaka
I almost fell down this the first night we arrived in Melaka as it was dark. That might have been fun!!! 15th Feb What a horrible nights sleep in my jail cell. I woke up to several dogs barking (that were actually living in the place we were staying), doors slamming and people yelling. On the business card it said "just like home" and even though there is usually some yelling in my house this was just crazy! I was up earlier then the girls (who didn't sleep so well either) so i just walked around for a while to pass the time. I got myself a Milo shake for breakfast (i cant believe they have Milo here, you beauty!) and headed back to my cell. The cell is so hot so we head out and of course its even hotter outside. There is absolutely no-where to get breakfast and not much is open so we skip it and get a cab to the centre of town to act like a tourist for a while and get a trishaw around town. We bargained for a while and ended up walking away to have the man follow us agreeing to our price. We got him down to 30Ringett (RM) for a 1/2 hour ride. It was so Kitschig (Tacky in German) and i
Smile
Moo goes to town on a trishaw guess touristy but we liked it. I guess i am a tourist so there is nothing wrong with acting like one every now and then. The poor men who ride these things must have really good leg muscles as riding a bike on your own up a hill can be tough but these guys do it with tourists attached to the bike! Hats off! Trishaws are just bikes with i guess you would call them side cars attached to them. I must also mention that some of them are made even tackier by the fake flowers that they use to dress it up!
We saw a few of the sites (nothing major in Melaka), the best being A'famosa which had a pretty good view at the top, and they then dropped us of in the middle of China Town/Little India and we had to walk back to the centre of town where we got a little lost. We saw so many better places we could have stayed, but i guess shit like that happens. We then got a cab back to where we were staying (or somewhere near it!) and the cab was literally falling to pieces. At home
Melaka On Trishaw
Dont forget to notice the kitschig flowers this car would not pass rego in a million years yet it was a taxi in Malaysia, (making banging noises which i swear was a signal for me to get out). It didn't get us to our destination but we got out when we saw an organic vegetarian place that looked clean and good and it ended up being exactly that. For the first time on my trip i got to eat wholemeal rice!! When we left the restaurant a man crossing the street coming in our direction said to us "welcome, hello" and we said hello back. He then asked where we were from and the Karens replied and when i told him Australia he grinned, and said "ah, kangaroos and koala bears". I told him yes and he was so proud of himself. He was so cute. We then decided that we had seen everything Melaka was going to offer us so we got a cab back to the bus station and got the first available bus to Kuala Lumpur (KL). Me being me i couldn't sleep on the bus for fear of missing something out the window.
We arrive in KL where we have no idea
Everyone meet Karen and Karen
Looking very sexy on their ride round town where we are (some research on the bus might have been a good idea!!) or where we are going to stay. We have taxi drivers calling for us to go with them and hotel operators telling us to go with them, not to mention it has just started to rain. We didn't want the whole Melaka thing to happen again so we decide to walk away from all these people and try to clear our heads before deciding. Whilst walking to what looked like somewhere to stay we walk past the best looking guy i have seen on my travels thus far (and i didn't bloody say anything, all i could do was smile and laugh at the rain falling (and he did the same!)) The place we saw wasn't going to cut it (a group of desperate over-middle aged men where standing out the front - don't know about you but not my idea (or the girls) of a great place to stay!) so we end up getting a cab to take us to where the hostels were. We were now in no mood to stand around so we paid him 25RM and he dropped us at a place
My Trishaw ahead
Look at the beautiful flowers that looked great, but no vacancies. So we walk around the corner to where the hostel operator pointed out to us and find a little paradise called the green hut. I get a mixed dorm and the girls get a room to themselves. I know this is going to be a great place as there is an Elvis poster on the door, and paintings of nature on the walls! We find out over dinner with a Swiss girl (Marlin) that we should have only paid 10RM for the cab and we feel swindled again. CRAP!! She also tells us about a place called the Cameron Highlands and highly reccommended it to us as she had just come from there. We eat Indian next door and go out for one beer (they were so expensive). KL is just as hot as Singapore!
