One of the Neighbours
A delightful place this. Gone are the showers of Singapore and the clouds of Kuala Lumpur. We're further north here so I suppose it's a bit like Darwin in the southern hemisphere (ie with a rainy season and a dry one.) There has to be some rain sometime to sustain the rain forest.
We're getting used to the heat a bit more now, but yesterday lunchtime we'd had enough heat for one day after descending on the cable car to the little shopping area below. And not a traditional pub or cafe in sight! We ended up drinking the local Coke and Lemonade!
The macaque neighbours squat under our floorboards (between the stilts) and climb all over our roof and verandah at dusk and dawn. And they have very little fear of humans. If we stare at them, they just stare back! One of them showed us his injured thumb, but we declined to treat it. Their cousins, the dusky leaf monkeys, are a bit more reticent, but they have an excellent party trick. If we humans get too nosy, they climb up the nearest tree and wee down on us for amusement. But they're so charming, we forgive

them easily as long as they miss!
We've taken lots of pictures, so I hope I can download some of them soon. The views from 710 metres up the mountain were particularly good. The rain forest here is pretty unspoiled, unlike other parts of Malaysia. And the engineering on the cable railway and the sightseeing bridge was worthy of the Swiss. Some of the Malays, though, don't seem to know how to queue! As ever, the Chinese are more circumspect. The reverse is true when it comes to dressing though. Chinese girls show off the latest fashions attractively while the Malay girls are more modestly attired, with head scarves, and long skirts or trousers.
To-night we're off to sample the night life in Kuah town. Don't worry, we've arranged for transport to bring us home. (Incidentally, our wounds are now mostly better and we're behaving a bit better now!)
