Macau The second half of our Spring Holiday was spent in Macau, 60 kilometers across the Pearl River estuary from Hong Kong. The ferry trip was pretty uneventful, not much to see until you actually get there. Macau consists of a peninsula and a couple of islands. Maritime Museum

The museum was filled with interesting displays with many models of Chinese and European ships. Lots of English captions.

A-Ma Temple

Dedicated to the goddess who is credited with saving a large merchant ship in the 15th century. A popular saying we read: "A-Ma Temple exists before Maco"

Macau TV Tower

One of the tallest of its type in the world. The second tallest bungy jumping platform. I don't think I'll be visiting any time soon. One of the three big bridges to Taipa is in the background.

Gaia Lighthouse

Built in the 1860s, it is still a working lighthouse on the highest point in Macau.

This cannon guards the approaches to the city from the sea. The Friendship Bridge to Taipa is in the background. The approach from Hong Kong by ferry comes in under this bridge.

This is the one we saw from the Gaia Fortress. It was pretty big and the wall around it was very long. But it was worth the visit.

It is fun to Google the names of people who seem "famous"; this chap was the first and only Baron of Asuncion. One of his descendants was the president of the Macau Legislative Assembly just prior to the return of Macau as a Special Administrative Region of China.

This is a typical street on the way back to the hotel. The buildings have some really interesting colours and the flowers are a nice touch.

Just before we got back to the hotel, we discovered another cemetery! This one appeared to be Chinese and the markers were quite different.

These guys will sing, just like the Venetian gondoliers. Wait a minute, these are the Venetian gondoliers; it's just that they are the Venetian Casino gondoliers, not Venice, Italy.

The sky is always blue, the clouds are puffy and the night is drawing in. How restful here away for the gambling tables....
