A ravine following the Maki River for a distance of 3 km, Oninoshitaburui is filled with rocks of various shapes and sizes. In Izumo ancient legend a love story is told wherein Wanizame emerges from the sea in search of Tamahime-no-Mikoto but is obstructed by the rocks and never reaches her.

The Itohara family is said to have come from samurai sent to Shimane from Hiroshima in 1624, and who settled in the present location in 1798. They worked at iron-making for 280 years. The Itohara Memorial Hall was founded in order to preserve valuable treasures gathered by the family.
